The production originally began as an eight-episode TV series. During development, the team decided to bring the animation and sound to cinemas first, creating an edited theatrical version of the story.

The TV anime will now return to that original format, with new episodes and cuts that were not included in the movie, expanding on the story.
Wolf and Kuro’s journey gets more room to breathe
Based on FromSoftware’s Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, Sekiro: No Defeat follows the shinobi Wolf and his master, Kuro, the Divine Heir, in a fantastical reimagining of Sengoku-era Japan.
The original game is built around Wolf’s mission to protect Kuro, with loyalty, blood and sacrifice at the center of their story.
The additional material should make the series particularly relevant for viewers who have already watched the theatrical version. According to ARCH, the TV series retains the movie’s story as its foundation while adding scenes and cuts that were left out of the theatrical edit. The production team says the two versions are intended to offer different experiences.
Who is making the Sekiro No Defeat anime?
The fully hand-drawn anime is produced by KADOKAWA, Qzil.la and ARCH, with Qzil.la handling animation production.
Kenichi Kutsuna directs the series, with Takuya Satou on the screenplay and Takahiro Kishida handling character designs. Shunsuke Fukui serves as deputy director, while Kaito Moki is chief animation director and Takashi Mukoda is action animation director.
The creative team also includes Yuji Kaneko as art director, Azusa Sasaki as color designer, Keisuke Nozawa as cinematographer, Yoshinori Murakami as editor and Yasushi Nagura as sound director. Shuta Hasunuma provides the music.

A new way to experience FromSoftware’s Sekiro
The anime is based on Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice, FromSoftware’s 2019 action-adventure game, which has sold more than 10 million copies worldwide.
Known alongside Elden Ring, Bloodborne, and Dark Souls as part of FromSoftware’s influential catalog, Sekiro gives the anime a particularly rich setting to reinterpret. Rather than simply recreating the game as a feature-length film, the Sekiro No Defeat anime is now getting the opportunity to spend more time with its central characters.
For fans who have already seen the theatrical version, that makes the January 2027 series more than a second way to watch the same story. The expanded cut will bring new scenes and additional content, giving Wolf and Kuro’s journey a chance to unfold in a format built around eight episodes.
When does the Sekiro No Defeat anime come out?
The Sekiro No Defeat anime will begin streaming on Crunchyroll in January 2027, with eight episodes released as a series. The episodes will stream weekly, although Crunchyroll has not announced an exact premiere date yet.
Crunchyroll will stream the series exclusively worldwide, excluding Japan, China, Korea, Russia and Belarus.
The theatrical version is still playing in Japan
The movie version of Sekiro: No Defeat opened in Japanese theaters on Friday, September 4, 2026, initially as a three-week limited engagement.
That run has since been extended following positive audience response, with additional screenings scheduled from Friday, October 2, 2026.
Before its Japanese theatrical release, the anime screened at the Annecy International Animation Film Festival as part of the “Feature Films: Midnight Specials” program. It also made its North American premiere at the Fantasia International Film Festival.
The unusual release strategy means Sekiro: No Defeat is effectively getting two versions of its story: a condensed theatrical cut designed for the big screen, followed by the longer episodic version.
