The moment when Aizen stops Ichigo’s sword is not just a core Bleach memory – it has cemented itself as one of the most epic moments in all of anime history.

It wasn’t just the animation quality or the revelation that Aizen was alive or even the “hero versus villain” coolness factor – no, it did something more, something that other anime titles have yet to achieve.

When Aizen Stops Ichigo: How the epic moment came to be

In Bleach Episode 60 “Reality of the Despair, the Assassin’s Dagger is Swung”, Captain of the 5th Division, Aizen Sousuke, reveals to his vice-captain Hinamori Momo that his death was fake and he was indeed still alive.

As she clings to him in disbelief and comfort, he takes advantage of the situation to stab her with his Zanpakuto.

The fact that he gravely injures his very own innocent vice-captain who cared about him so much was a chrysalis – it marked the start of Aizen’s growing villainy and just how ruthless he can be throughout the Bleach anime.

After various confrontations, Gin and Aizen teleport to Sokyoku Hill, the rock located at the center of Seireitei in Soul Society. They appear behind Renji Abarai and Rukia Kuchiki, who was unknowingly carrying the Hogyoku that Aizen so desired.

These events set up Bleach Episode 61 “Aizen Stands! Horrible Ambitions” which aired in Japan on December 13, 2005 – the episode when Aizen stops Ichigo’s sword.

Sensing Rukia, our Bleach protagonist Ichigo Kurosaki arrives at the scene just in time to block another one of Aizen’s sword attacks which had already wounded Renji.

Now united, the dynamic duo recognize the pinch they are in. Renji rationalized that while they may not be able to defeat the Captains standing before them, they would have a better chance of escaping if they manage to, at the very least, immobilize their opponents.

“All right, then! Let’s fight together!” Ichigo agrees, which is cue for his theme, “Number One – Bankai” to start playing. Composed by Shiro Sagisu, Bleach’s long-standing OST composer, it was released in 2023 as an English song written by MASH and sung by Hazel Fernandes.

To start, Renji uses Higa Zekkou, Bite of a Broken Baboon’s Fang, channeling his spiritual energy into broken segments of Zabimaru to attack from all angles. Here, Number One’s verse kicks in: “If you wanna see some action / Gotta be the center of attention.”

As pieces of Zabimaru fling towards Aizen, Ichigo waits for an opportunity to move. Already in Bankai form, he channels all his spiritual energy into his blade for an upswing slash – which Aizen stops with a single finger

In these moments, the song lyrics “You know that this is where you gotta be / It must be your destiny” plays and ends abruptly, cutting into silence the moment Aizen completely blocks Ichigo’s attack.

Aizen didn’t just stop Ichigo’s blade – he also stopped Ichigo’s music

In the next moment, we see Aizen curling his index finger down, and then blood spurting out from a big slash wound on Ichigo even though Aizen didn’t swinging his sword.

No one knew just how powerful Aizen was at that time, not even the audience.

After all, during his infiltration of the Soul Society, Ichigo was running grueling gauntlet—defeating Jidanbo, Ikkaku Madarame, Renji, and battling Kenpachi Zaraki to a double knockout—before ultimately triumphing over Byakuya Kuchiki in their climactic final duel.

In Baikai form, he managed to take down other Captains, so everyone expected him to be able to go toe-on-toe with Aizen.

And yet, with a single finger, he was brought down to the ground, showing just how terrifyingly powerful Aizen is. He can’t even be compared to the other Captains – he was already in a league of his own.

Ichigo returns the favor to Aizen

Many seasons later in Bleach Season 14, The Arrancar Part 6: Fall of the Espada, we finally see the two evolved giants go head-to-head again.

After spending three months training inside the Dangai to master the Final Getsuga Tensho, Ichigo emerged with a level of spiritual power that transcended normal Shinigami limits.

Meanwhile, Aizen had continually evolved through his fusion with the Hogyoku in Hueco Mundo, eventually transforming into a grotesque, Hollow-like monstrosity who believed he was completely untouchable.

Yet when the two finally clashed again in Bleach Episode 308, Ichigo casually stops Aizen’s sword swing with his bare hand – and the background music.

This stunning display serves as a poetic role reversal from their legendary Soul Society encounter, where Aizen had effortlessly halted Ichigo’s Bankai blade using just a single finger.

Bleach TYBW goes full circle, referencing when Aizen stops Ichigo

Just when we thought the Bleach anime is done with stopping bare swords with bare hands, the last and final season, Bleach TYBW Part 4: The Calamity takes us back to this power move.

In TYBW Episode 44, “The Perfect Crimson,” clashes between Shinigami and Quincy are happening on multiple battle fronts. Hitsugaya and Kuchiki Byakuya are still occupied by Gerard Valkyrie, the Miracle, while Uryu Ishida takes on Jugram Haschwalth.

At the same time, Ichigo and Orihime Inoue are confronting Yhwach in the castle with neither party making much headway – until the previous episode when Ichigo revealed that slashing wildly into Yhwach’s black power wasn’t for nothing.

His goal was to flood his sword with Quincy spiritual pressure “to wake someone up” as his sword changed from black to White, his Hollow self is revealed. This is also when Ichigo’s theme, Number One – Bankai, starts playing with an instrumental introduction.

Unlike past encounters where White took over Ichigo uncontrollably, this time, only half his appearance changed. Even then, Ichigo admits that he still can’t fully control him yet, which is why he used Yhwach’s power to assist.

As Inoue reflects and reacts, Number One – Bankai jumps into the intro-chorus: “So baby, now you feel like number one / Shining bright for everyone / Living out your fantasy / The brightest star for all to see.”

Ichigo’s theme continues playing in the background as Yhwach exchanges words and finally draws his Quincy sword. By now, Number One – Bankai is at its three quarter mark.

Without missing a beat, Ichigo launches himself forward with a straight vertical slash. Even though Yhwach, like Aizen, stops it with his bare hand, the music did not stop. Ichigo’s theme Number One – Bankai did not stop!

These notable differences foreshadow what’s to come in TYBW.

Firstly, he uses his entire palm. Compared to Aizen who only needed a finger, this shows that the power level difference between Yhwach and Ichigo is not as large as it was before. In fact, it is more comparable to when Ichigo stopped Aizen’s sword in Hollow form where he also used his palm, where the after shock sent everything behind them in a radius flying.

What’s more, when Aizen stopped Ichigo’s sword, his theme song didn’t even make it to the chorus. Aizen made sure of it.

This time around, Ichigo in full power is allowed to finally be Number One because even though Yhwach had temporarily stopped his blade, his theme song continues.

After all, it’s the last arc. It’s a shonen. Ichigo is supposed to win – we’re reaching the end of a 22-year Bleach anime era, and the producers let his song play.

Remember, it’s not just titled “Number One”; it’s called “Number One – Bankai” and Ichigo does exactly that in the following episode, unleashing a Bankai we’ve not seen before.

It’s a beautiful circle back to Aizen and Ichigo’s defining moment in Seireitei. We are made aware of just how far the Bleach protagonist has come as we finally get to listen to the song in full that gives depth and meaning in final few episodes of our beloved Bleach anime.
