What is the One Piece manga?

One Piece is a manga written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. It was first published in Japan in Weekly Shonen Jump in July 1997.

The story centers on Monkey D. Luffy, a young man whose body gained rubber-like properties after eating a Devil Fruit. His sole ambition is to become the King of the Pirates by finding the ultimate treasure, the One Piece, with his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates.

Their journey begins in the first chapter, “Romance Dawn: The Dawn of the Adventure” where a young Luffy eats the Devil Fruit and receives his straw hat from the pirate Red-Haired Shanks as a promise for the future.

The manga series holds the Guinness World Record for “The most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author,” with over half a billion copies in circulation worldwide.
