"Head is spinning thinking 'bout boys."

If you’ve spent any time in anime and manga spaces, you’ve probably come across the yaoi genre and noticed that its fanbase is largely made up of girls. A lot of girls, actually.

It raises the question “Why do girls like yaoi?” and the real reasons run a lot deeper than just “pretty boys.”

GO DEEPER AND EXPAND YOUR HEARTS

The 5 best Boys Love manga on Kobo that deserve a spot in your library

Where to read Boys Love manga: All best apps and sites

So what is it about two guys falling in love on screen that captivates millions of female readers and viewers worldwide? The answer is more interesting than you’d think.

What is yaoi? The origin of the Boys’ Love genre

To understand why girls love yaoi, it helps to know what the genre is and where it came from.

Yaoi is a genre of manga, anime, and fan fiction that centers on romantic and sexual relationships between male characters.

SEE ALSO: Where to read Boys Love manhwa legally: All best apps and sites

The word itself is an acronym from the Japanese phrase “yama nashi, ochi nashi, imi nashi,” which loosely translates to “no climax, no resolution, no meaning.”

Credit: Shikke

It was originally a self-deprecating joke used by doujinshi (self-published fan comic) creators in the 1970s and 80s, poking fun at stories that were light on plot but heavy on romance.

The genre grew out of shoujo manga circles, where female artists began creating stories that centered on emotional intimacy and male relationships in ways that mainstream manga simply wasn’t offering at the time.

SEE ALSO: Go For It, Nakamura-kun!! review: Is it really Boys Love or something else?

Over time, it evolved and branched into what fans now commonly refer to as Boys’ Love, or BL, around the world.

<img decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://fanstanza-gg-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/go-for-it-nakamura-kun-okuto-nakamura-aiki-hirose-clutching-chest-red-background-1024x576.jpg" alt="Okuto Nakamura clutching his chest with a flustered look on his face in Go For It, Nakamura-kun!!.
Today, BL is the dominant term both in Japan and globally. Yaoi originally referred to more explicit, plot-light doujinshi content, while BL became the umbrella term for the broader commercial genre covering everything from sweet romances to mature stories.

In practice, the line between the two has blurred significantly over the years. Most fans and Japanese publishers now use BL as the default. If you hear someone say “yaoi,” they likely mean BL in the broader sense since the terms are used interchangeably more often than not.

Who reads yaoi? A look at the fujoshi culture

A lot of people read yaoi, but the genre’s biggest and most dedicated fanbase is overwhelmingly made up of women and girls.

Credit: Fujoking

In Japanese culture, female yaoi fans are called fujoshi, which literally translates to “rotten girl” — a tongue-in-cheek label that the community has largely embraced and reclaimed with pride.

Male fans of the genre are called fudanshi, and while they’re the minority, they’re a part of the fanbase too.

These terms have since been globalized, finding a permanent home in the international community’s vocabulary.

However, being a fujoshi isn’t just about reading yaoi or BL. It’s a whole identity within the fandom, one that comes with its own humor, its own vocabulary, and its own set of deeply held opinions about ships, story tropes, and character dynamics.

Credit: Studio Deen

Fujoshi are known for being passionate, creative, and vocal, and they’ve been a driving force behind the global spread of BL culture.

Together, fujoshi and fudanshi communities have built a fandom that spans continents, languages, and platforms, from manga forums and fan fiction archives to social media and convention culture.

What might surprise most people is just how global the yaoi and BL fanbase is. From Southeast Asia to Latin America to Europe, BL has found passionate audiences far beyond Japan. In Thailand, the genre has influenced mainstream television, giving rise to an entire industry of BL live-action dramas with massive international viewership.

Why do girls like yaoi?

Credit: Meguru Hinohara

Why do girls like yaoi? The answer doesn’t lie in just one thing. Girls are drawn to yaoi for many reasons. These reasons may vary from person to person, but a few common themes come up again and again.

Breaking free from female stereotypes

One of the biggest reasons is the freedom from female stereotypes. In most mainstream romances, the female lead tends to follow a familiar script.

She’s passive, she waits, she’s defined largely by her relationship with the male lead. Yaoi removes that entirely.

There’s no female character to project onto, which gives female readers more freedom. They can enjoy the romance on its own terms, without the baggage of gender expectations getting in the way.

Credit: Lerche

A different kind of romantic dynamic

Because both characters in a yaoi story are male, the relationship doesn’t automatically fall into the familiar push-and-pull of heterosexual romance.

This opens the door to a different kind of romantic tension, one where both characters have to actively explore vulnerability, power, and intimacy on their own terms.

So for readers who care more about how two people fall in love, yaoi delivers that in a way that a lot of other genres don’t, with emotional tension like no other.

The appeal of bishounen character design

Credit: Yamane Ayano

A big part of yaoi’s visual appeal comes down to its roots in shoujo manga, a genre known for its expressive, beautifully drawn characters.

Bishounen, which literally translates to “beautiful boy,” is a character archetype that has been central to the genre from the very beginning. These characters are drawn with intention — delicate features, expressive eyes, and emotions worn openly on their faces.

For many readers, this visual language is highly appealing, and it’s a big part of what makes picking up a yaoi or BL title so inviting because they are drawn in a very similar art style.

Exploring mature themes safely

Credit: Kazuki Irodori

For some girls, yaoi also offers a safe space to explore themes of desire, identity, and relationships from a distance.

Because the story isn’t about them directly, there’s a layer of separation that makes it easier to engage with complex or intense emotions without it feeling too personal.

This distance can be especially meaningful when the themes being explored are ones that feel difficult or vulnerable to confront head-on, like questions about attraction, identity, or what you want from a relationship.

Credit: SuBLime

Experiencing these themes through fictional characters creates a buffer that makes the exploration feel lower stakes, while still being genuinely emotionally engaging.

After all, fiction has always been a space where readers and viewers work through things they can’t always put into words.

Yaoi creates a safe community for women

Beyond the stories themselves, yaoi comes with a community. Being a yaoi or BL fan means being part of a creative and deeply passionate fandom, one full of fan art, fan fiction, heated shipping debates, and people who get emotional about fictional couples.

Credit: Studio Deen

Many in the community who consume BL stories are also big consumers of their official fan merch. Some exclusive merch are localized in their country of origin, while others can be bought online. As a result, online Group Order Manage (GOMs) are commonplace.

In Singapore for example, GOMs are typically conducted in community-run Fandom Telegram Channels which creates another layer of subculture within the BL fandom.

This explains why for a lot of girls, the social experience of being a yaoi fan is just as appealing as the genre itself.

Credit: Satelight

It’s also worth saying that sometimes, the reason girls like yaoi is simply because they are good stories. BL as a genre has produced some genuinely moving, beautifully written narratives about longing, acceptance, and love that would resonate with anyone, regardless of who the characters are.

Recommended yaoi titles for beginners

New to yaoi and not sure where to start? Here are some of the best titles to ease you into the genre.

Yaoi anime for beginners

YAOI ANIME TITLE

YAOI ANIME DESCRIPTION

Given

A music-centered love story about a guitarist who falls for a boy with a complicated past.

Doukyuusei (Classmates)

A simple story about two classmates who bond over music practice and gradually develop feelings for each other.

Sasaki and Miyano

A sweet story about a delinquent upperclassman who borrows Boys’ Love manga from a quieter underclassman, and slowly realizes his feelings go beyond friendship.

Yaoi manga for beginners

Credit: Lerche

YAOI MANGA TITLE

YAOI MANGA DESCRIPTION

Given

The manga that the anime is based on is worth reading for the extended story and stunning artwork.

Cherry Magic!

A lighthearted, feel-good story about a man who accidentally gains the ability to read minds through touch and discovers his coworker has feelings for him.

Our Dreams at Dusk

A quiet, thoughtful story touching on identity and belonging alongside its romance.

So, why do girls like yaoi? As it turns out, the answer is anything but simple.

At its core, yaoi tells stories about love, vulnerability, and human connection. And great stories have a way of finding their audience, regardless of who they’re about.

One Piece is a shonen manga series written and illustrated by mangaka Eiichiro Oda. The story first set sail on July 22, 1997 when it was published in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine.

It follows Monkey D. Luffy, a cheerful man who gains the permanent properties of rubber after accidentally eating a Devil Fruit. Inspired by his childhood idol, the pirate Red-Haired Shanks, Luffy sets out on a journey across the ocean to assemble his own crew called the Straw Hat Pirates.

Their ultimate goal is to explore the treacherous, unpredictable waters of the Grand Line, defeat formidable rivals, and claim the One Piece. Whoever finds this hidden treasure left behind by Gol D. Roger will claim the title of the Pirate King.

Beyond its storytelling, One Piece is a massive commercial success. It holds the official Guinness World Record for the most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author. With over 600 million copies in circulation worldwide, it is the best-selling manga series in history.

This success turned the manga into a global franchise with adaptations across almost every medium. Toei Animation’s anime adaptation has been running since 1999 with over 1,000 episodes, alongside numerous feature films like the box-office hit One Piece Film: Red.

In 2023, Netflix released a highly successful live-action series that topped global streaming charts.

How to read One Piece manga panels correctly

If you are transitioning from Western comic books or graphic novels, the layout of the One Piece manga looks backward at first glance. It is important to remember that traditional Japanese manga is read from:

right side of the page to the left, and

from top to bottom.

To follow the story, always start with the panel in the upper-right corner of the page. Read across the row to the left, and once you reach the edge, drop down to the rightmost panel of the row below.

Dialogue bubbles and narration boxes follow this same directional flow. Within any single panel, read the text bubbles starting from the highest and rightmost one, moving downward and to the left.

How to read One Piece manga correctly and in chronological order

Credit: Eiichiro Oda/Shueisha

One Piece follows a completely linear story. There are no side-stories or alternate universes to track. If you want to know how to read One Piece manga correctly, simply start at Chapter 1 and read straight through to the latest release.

The timeline is divided into major narrative blocks called Sagas, which are further broken down into individual story arcs:

East Blue Saga (Chapters 1–100): Luffy gathers his initial crew members and sets out for the Grand Line.

Alabasta Saga (Chapters 101–217): The crew explores the Grand Line to save a desert kingdom from a criminal syndicate.

Sky Island Saga (Chapters 218–302): The Straw Hats search for a legendary lost city hidden above the clouds.

Water 7 / Enies Lobby Saga (Chapters 303–441): The crew clashes with World Government assassins to rescue one of their own.

Thriller Bark Saga (Chapters 442–489): A horror-themed voyage into a massive ghost ship ruled by a shadow-stealing warlord.

Summit War Saga (Chapters 490–597): The crew is separated, and Luffy races to stop a high-profile global execution.

Fish-Man Island Saga (Chapters 598–653): Following a two-year training period, the reunited crew journeys deep beneath the ocean.

Dressrosa Saga (Chapters 654–801): A pirate alliance forms to take down an underground black-market kingpin.

Whole Cake Island Saga (Chapters 802–908): A daring rescue mission into the dangerous territory of an Emperor of the Sea.

Wano Country Saga (Chapters 909–1057): A massive conflict to liberate an isolated nation from a tyrannical ruler.

Final Saga (Chapters 1058–Present): The ultimate stretch of the story, beginning with the revelations on Egghead Island.

If you’re wondering where can I read One Piece manga for free, the good news is you don’t have to resort to shady piracy sites. The official publishers offer incredibly generous, legitimate ways to read the series at zero cost.

Yuki Tsukumo death

Credit: MAPPA, Toho Animation, Shueisha, Gege Akutami, Crunchyroll

Yuki Tsukumo, one of the four special grade sorcerers, fights Kenjaku alongside Choso to protect Master Tengen. Her cursed technique allows her to add mass to herself and her shikigami, giving her enough force to pressure him early in the fight.

Despite this, Kenjaku’s versatility and control over multiple cursed techniques allow him to adapt. He counters Yuki using gravity-based abilities, limiting her movements and forcing her into a prolonged exchange.

As the fight reaches its peak, Yuki sustains fatal injuries but continues fighting. She pushes her technique to its limit in a final attempt to take Kenjaku down with her.

The attack fails to kill him, and Yuki dies from the damage she sustains, marking the loss of a special grade sorcerer and a major shift in power.

Ryu Ishigori death

Credit: MAPPA, Toho Animation, Shueisha, Gege Akutami, Crunchyroll

Ryu Ishigori returns after the Sendai Colony arc and later encounters Sukuna. Known for having the highest cursed energy output among players, Ryu enters the fight expecting a direct clash.

However, the gap in strength is immediate. Sukuna reads Ryu’s abilities quickly and counters without difficulty.

The fight ends almost instantly, with Sukuna killing Ryu in a single decisive attack. His death highlights the scale of Sukuna’s power and reinforces the shift toward endgame-level threats.

The latter half of the Culling Game is defined by direct combat between high-level sorcerers and reincarnated players.

Unlike earlier arcs, deaths here are not the result of large-scale incidents but of decisive one-on-one battles. The following table lists the major confirmed deaths expected to be adapted in Season 4.

Episode numbers will be added once Season 4 airs and the anime confirms the exact placement of each death.

We expect the events of Season 4 to transition directly into the Shinjuku Showdown arc. In the context of who dies in Jujutsu Kaisen Season 4, this transition is important, as the deaths that occur during the latter half of the Culling Game directly shape the matchups and stakes that follow.

With the major players established and several key characters already falling, the story moves toward its final stage.

The focus shifts away from the structure of the Culling Game and into a more direct conflict involving the strongest remaining characters, setting up the series’ endgame.

Updated on May 25, 2026 at 12:10am: Kei Urana deleted her X account on May 24. Links to her posts have been removed.

Gachiakuta author Kei Urana has addressed the ongoing issue of manga piracy head-on, following a question from a fan that quickly escalated into a wider debate online.

The sequence of events began on April 16, 2026 when a fan asked Urana on X (formerly Twitter) whether it was legal to read Gachiakuta through Discord—implying the existence of channels where chapters are uploaded and shared for free.

USE THESE PLATFORMS INSTEAD

Discover manga the magazine way: 12 countries, 5 top publishers, endless titles

How to get free coins on Webtoon: Legitimate ways to earn, save, and maximize

The original post has since been deleted, but Urana’s reply was direct and unambiguous.

“That is illegal,” she responded.

Gachiakuta author speaks out on illegal manga reading

Credit: Bones Film, Kei Urana

What might have ended as a brief clarification instead sparked a broader conversation about piracy, accessibility, and the value of creative work—one Urana chose to address in detail.

In a follow-up statement posted today, April 21, 2026, Urana explained that she had spent several days researching the issue across different countries, including the financial realities many readers face.

SEE ALSO: You can now create your own manga t-shirts with iconic panels from Shonen Jump

She acknowledged that, for some, piracy is not simply a choice but a limitation. She said she understands “that for many people, pirate sites are the only way they can read manga,” adding that she is aware prices can be significantly higher overseas.

Urana also noted that some fans had discouraged her from even raising the topic. However, she pushed back on that idea, arguing that silence carries its own consequences.

Her statement frames piracy not just as a legal issue, but as something that could erode the long-term cultural and creative value of the medium itself.

Challenging the “free doesn’t hurt sales” manga piracy argument

Urana also directly addressed a common claim within piracy discussions—that reading manga for free does not negatively impact sales.

She firmly rejected that notion.

“That is not true. ‘Free’ lowers the value of things.”

According to Urana, once audiences grow accustomed to free access, they may stop seeking out legitimate versions altogether.

Credit: Markus Spiske on Unsplash

At the same time, she acknowledged that dedicated fans who truly love a series often choose to support it properly.

Still, her core concern goes beyond revenue alone. As she explained, while compensation matters, she is equally focused on preserving the perceived worth of the work itself.

Efforts to improve legal access to manga and ongoing challenges

Despite her strong stance against piracy, Urana emphasized that she is not ignoring the accessibility problem.

She revealed that she and collaborator Hideyoshi Ando have been exploring ways to make their work more available to readers who cannot afford it or lack access through official channels.

While she did not share specifics, the Gachiakuta author confirmed that ideas are actively being considered.

Publishers, she added, are also working toward solutions—though progress takes time.Urana asked fans for patience, noting that delays should not be met with hostility.

She specifically addressed criticism she has seen online, including accusations of racism and claims that piracy acts as “free promotion.”

She described such arguments as misguided, urging readers to consider the perspective of creators and the cultural context behind their work.

A personal note on creating Gachiakuta

Urana also took a moment to reflect on the creative process behind Gachiakuta. While she originally intended to create manga independently—and remains the primary artist—she ultimately chose to collaborate with Ando.

She cited both his artistic talent and his ideas on how to bring a work to audiences as key reasons for the partnership.

It’s a reminder that manga creation is rarely a solo effort, and that the final product reflects contributions from multiple voices working toward a shared vision.

Shogi takes center stage at the Asian Civilizations Museum (ACM) as the institution refreshes its landmark exhibition, Let’s Play! The Art and Design of Asian Games, blending history, strategy, and pop culture into a timely cultural moment.

The exhibition arrives alongside a significant milestone: the museum’s acquisition of a historic championship game table, donated by the Singapore Weiqi Association.

HOW FAR IS ANIME’S REACH?

The Weeknd’s anime obsession runs deep — here’s what inspired House of Balloons

At the same time, ACM introduces a new showcase: Shogi in Manga: March Comes in Like a Lion, presented in partnership with the Japan Shogi Association to commemorate 60 years of Singapore–Japan diplomatic relations.

Shogi in manga: Where strategy meets storytelling

Running alongside the main exhibition, “Shogi in Manga: March Comes in Like a Lion” introduces visitors to shogi, Japan’s centuries-old strategy game, through the lens of contemporary storytelling.

Credit: Studio Pierrot, Masashi Kishimoto

A traditional Japanese strategy board game often described as a more dynamic counterpart to chess, shogi allows captured pieces to be reused by the opponent. With centuries of history, it blends deep tactical thinking with cultural significance, and remains a major professional sport in Japan today.

This intellectual depth has also made shogi a familiar presence in Japanese pop culture, most notably in Naruto, where Shikamaru Nara is often seen playing the game as a reflection of his calm, highly strategic mindset and genius-level planning in battle.

ENJOY THIS, FELLOW INTELLECTUAL

Liar Game anime review: Does the long-awaited adaptation live up to the hype?

The exhibition is inspired by the acclaimed series March Comes in Like a Lion by Chica Umino, a critically acclaimed Japanese manga first serialized in Japan in 2007, later adapted into an anime that aired from 2016 to 2018.

The story follows a young professional shogi player navigating competition, loneliness, and personal growth, offering one of the most thoughtful portrayals of the game in modern pop culture.

“As someone who promotes Japanese culture, I am particularly excited that this showcase brings together two cultural treasures,” said Akiko Kawabe, Director of Japan Creative Centre, Embassy of Japan in Singapore.

“This showcase brings together two cultural treasures – Japan’s shogi and manga – beautifully demonstrating Japanese games and culture,” she added.

Visitors can explore life-sized character panels, a manga reading corner, and digital scenes that highlight the journey of a young professional shogi player. The experience is designed to resonate particularly with younger audiences encountering the game for the first time.

At the heart of the refreshed exhibition is the Ing Cup championship table, first used during the final two games of the 1988 tournament—one of the most prestigious events in weiqi (Go).

Its addition to ACM’s national collection ensures that a defining chapter of Singapore’s mind sports history is preserved for future generations.

The donation comes at a pivotal moment for Singapore’s weiqi scene. On March 31, 2026, 15-year-old Chen Yihang became the nation’s first professional 1-dan player, certified by the Nihon Ki-in.

His journey—from competing at the 2019 Southeast Asia Go Congress to training full-time in Japan—reflects the growing global reach of Singapore’s mind sports community.

A championship moment in Singapore

Credit: Fanstanza

The showcase also ties into the SJ60 Eiou Championship Singapore Match, one of Japan’s major professional shogi title events.

Following the final match on April 3, 2026, the very board used in competition will be displayed within the exhibition—offering a rare bridge between live play and museum curation.

“I’m truly pleased Japanese culture can transcend borders and generations, connecting with so many fans,” said Kawabe.

This integration of contemporary competition and cultural storytelling underscores shogi’s enduring relevance, not just as a game of strategy, but as a living cultural tradition.

Credit: Fanstanza

Beyond shogi and weiqi, the refreshed Let’s Play! exhibition expands its scope with 25 video interviews featuring Singapore-based mind sports players. These personal accounts—detailing training, discipline, and passion—offer visitors a deeper understanding of the intellectual rigor behind these games.

ACM’s initiative reflects a broader shift: the growing recognition of mind sports as official sports in Singapore, and their continued importance in shaping cultural identity across Asia.

Let’s Play! The Art and Design of Asian Games runs until Sunday, June 7, 2026, at the Asian Civilizations Museum.

With its blend of history, competition, and pop culture, the exhibition offers a rare opportunity to experience shogi and other mind sports in a new light.

If you’re looking for the best BL manga on Kobo, there’s honestly a lot to choose from—but not everything hits the same.

Some stories stay with you long after you finish them, while others just blur together.

EXPAND YOUR COLLECTION

Where to read Boys Love manga: All best apps and sites

You can now create your own manga t-shirts with iconic panels from Shonen Jump

This list focuses on the ones that actually stand out. From soft, slow-burn romances to heavier, more emotional reads, these are the titles that feel memorable, well-written, and worth your time—whether you’re just getting into BL or already deep in it.

5 Best BL manga on Kobo worth your time

1. Pink Heart Jam — a fresh, mature read

Credit: SuBLime

One of the most memorable entries among the best BL manga on Kobo is Pink Heart Jam, a modern boys’ love series by Shikke that quickly became one of my personal favorites.

What sets it apart is how it approaches romance with a more mature, grounded sensibility — focusing on Haiga and college upperclassman Kanae as they work through attraction, self-discovery, and real‑world challenges.

SO YOU CAN APPRECIATE THEM ALL

Manhwa vs manga: What’s the difference?
The story doesn’t shy away from complexity — Haiga’s job at a male brothel gives the narrative a depth and honesty you don’t always see in other boys love titles.

While Pink Heart Jam hasn’t received an anime adaptation yet, it has already spawned a drama CD and inspired real‑world fan events and collaborations in Japan.

Shikke’s skill at balancing vulnerability, emotional growth, and intimacy makes this one of the best BL manga on Kobo, and it’s easy to imagine it gaining even more attention if it ever gets animated.

2. Sasaki and Miyano — gentle high school romance

A title I often recommend when talking about the best BL manga on Kobo is Sasaki and Miyano, by Sho Harusono.

IS THE EREADER WORTH IT?

Kobo Libra Color review: Lightweight, beautiful, and almost perfect

Originally serialized online starting in 2016, it has since been collected into multiple volumes and tells the story of two high school boys whose friendship slowly blossoms into something deeper.

The series is sweet, character-driven, and incredibly easy to get into — it even received an anime adaptation in 2022 and a sequel film in 2023 that continues the story.

Credit: Media Factory

What sets it apart is how gently it handles emotions and the way it depicts understanding, communication, and young love without heavy melodrama. For fans of slow-burn, heartwarming romance, this is one of the best BL manga on Kobo you can download right now.

What makes Sasaki and Miyano even richer is that its world doesn’t stop with just the main pair — it expands into the story of two beloved side characters.

This spin‑off, Hirano and Kagiura, also by Sho Harusono, began serialization in 2019 and follows classmates Taiga Hirano and Akira Kagiura as they grow closer while living together as dorm roommates.

Without spoiling anything, lets just say that unlike the straightforward sweetness of Sasaki and Miyano, Hirano and Kagiura leans into a slow burn that really lets you feel the tension, chemistry, and emotional growth between the two.

3. Given — music, emotion, and heart

Credit: Lerche

Another absolute classic among the best BL manga on Kobo is Given, written and illustrated by Natsuki Kizu.

This series began serialization in 2013 and finished in 2023, spanning nine volumes that balance romance, music, and deep emotional arcs.

At the center of Given is the relationship between guitarists Ritsuka Uenoyama and vocalist Mafuyu Sato, whose bond grows through their shared love of music.

The story doesn’t shy away from heavier themes like grief and personal growth — making it not just a romance but a truly affecting narrative.

The franchise has also been adapted into an anime series, films, and even a stage play, cementing its status as one of the most beloved BL stories out there. This emotional depth and multimedia reach make Given one of the most essential series on the list of best BL manga on Kobo.

4. Therapy Game — sharp romance drama

Credit: Meguru Hinohara

For something a bit edgier to add to your best BL manga on Kobo collection, Therapy Game delivers.

This title blends sharp character drama with romance and emotional intensity, centering around protagonists whose initial relationship begins as a setup but evolves into complexity and depth.

Typically praised for its more mature tone and blend of conflict and chemistry, Therapy Game has become a fan favorite for readers who want something a little more dramatic and less trope-heavy than lighter romance titles.

Its place on this list of best BL manga on Kobo reflects that appeal to readers who like heightened emotional stakes without losing the heart of BL.

5. Finder — Classic yaoi with even more edge

Credit: Yamane Ayano

Last but definitely not least on our list of best BL manga on Kobo is Finder, a long-running BL title by Ayano Yamane. First published in the early 2000s, Finder has become a classic in the genre.

The story follows freelance photographer Takaba and crime lord Asami, whose relationship begins under intense circumstances and evolves into something more layered.

Known for its mix of romantic tension, eroticism, and crime thriller elements, Finder is a staple for BL fans who appreciate a series with both passion and gritty character dynamics.

Its longevity and influence make it one of the best BL manga on Kobo for readers who want something iconic and bold.

Exporting Japan’s manga magazine culture

Comici aims to introduce global audiences to the magazine culture that shaped Japan’s Manga industry. By presenting serialized chapters from multiple creators together, the platform recreates the excitement of following ongoing series alongside other fans.

This approach highlights the collaborative ecosystem between authors, editors, and readers that has historically driven the success of manga magazines.

Reviving the classic manga magazine experience

One of the core goals behind comici Manga is to recreate the magazine-style reading experience that once defined Japan’s manga industry during its publishing golden age.

Traditionally, readers discovered new series through curated magazine issues that combined different genres and authors in a single publication. These magazines allowed both veteran creators and newcomers to reach audiences while encouraging fans to explore a variety of stories.

Credit: Tatsubon

However, as digital platforms became the dominant way to read manga, discovery patterns began to shift. Algorithm-driven recommendations and an emphasis on short-term engagement metrics have gradually replaced the curated magazine experience, which some industry observers say has led to slower growth and genre fatigue.

According to comici CEO Daisaku Manda, the new platform aims to address these challenges by combining modern digital convenience with the structure of classic Manga magazines.

One Piece is a manga written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. It was first published in Japan in Weekly Shonen Jump in July 1997.

The story centers on Monkey D. Luffy, a young man whose body gained rubber-like properties after eating a Devil Fruit. His sole ambition is to become the King of the Pirates by finding the ultimate treasure, the One Piece, with his crew, the Straw Hat Pirates.

Their journey begins in the first chapter, “Romance Dawn: The Dawn of the Adventure” where a young Luffy eats the Devil Fruit and receives his straw hat from the pirate Red-Haired Shanks as a promise for the future.

We’ll explore every detail to help you know more about manga vs manhwa and choose the best format for your reading habits.

Before we answer the question “What’s the difference between manga and manhwa?”, let’s take a closer look at their respective histories.

What is manga? Origin, history, format

Credit: Miika Laaksonen

Manga is the Japanese word for comics. Unlike Western comics, which are typically published in full color, manga is primarily a black-and-white medium.

The roots of manga can be traced back centuries to the Choju-giga (Scrolls of Frolicking Animals) from the 12th century, which used sequential art to tell stories.

CHECK OUT THE MOST POPULAR OF ALL TIME

Where to read Jujutsu Kaisen manga online — all official sources

Where to read One Piece manga online — all official sources

Modern manga as we recognize it today began to take shape in the late 19th and early 20th centuries through a fusion of traditional Japanese woodblock printing (ukiyo-e) and Western political cartoons.

The industry saw a massive boom in manga post-World War II. During this era, Osamu Tezuka, often called the “God of Manga,” revolutionized the medium. He introduced techniques such as dramatic camera angles, close-ups, and speed lines that gave the static pages a sense of motion.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://fanstanza-gg-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/02/astro-boy-manga-volume-1-volume-2-1024x576.jpg" alt="The cover for Astro Boy volumes 1 and 2 as compiled by Dark Horse Comics.
His work, which includes the iconic Astro Boy, set the blueprint for the visual language and narrative depth that modern manga follows.

One of the most defining characteristics of manga is its reading direction. Because of the way the Japanese language is written, manga is read from right to left and from the top of the page to the bottom. For international readers, this means starting at what Westerners would consider the back of the book.

In Japan, manga is typically first serialized in thick, phonebook-sized weekly or monthly magazines like Weekly Shonen Jump. If a series becomes popular, the individual chapters are later collected into standalone volumes called tankobon.

This cycle allows manga creators (known as mangaka) to build long-running epics that span dozens of volumes and several years of storytelling.

Credit: Shueisha, Tatsuki Fujimoto

Manga is primarily a black-and-white medium, utilizing ink and grey screentones to create depth. This monochromatic style originated from the demands of Japan’s weekly magazine industry, where rapid production and high-volume printing made full-color illustration too expensive and time-consuming for creators.

The art is defined by visual shorthand and expressive character designs. While styles vary, many artists use large eyes to emphasize emotion, supplemented by standardized symbols like a giant sweat drop for embarrassment, popping veins for anger, or bubbles for sleep. These cues allow readers to instantly understand a character’s internal state without the need for dialogue.

What is manhwa? Origin, history, format

Manhwa refers to South Korean comics. While the word manhwa technically describes any Korean comic, it is now most commonly associated with the modern, full-color vertical format known as webtoons.

Modern manhwa began to develop in the mid-20th century, heavily influenced by the political climate of Korea. For decades, it followed a similar trajectory to manga, with black-and-white art published in physical magazines.

Credit: Inklore

However, during the Korean economic crisis of the late 1990s, the print industry collapsed. This forced creators to move their work online, leading to the start of webtoons in the early 2000s on portals like Daum and Naver.

The most significant difference between manhwa vs manga and other comics is its infinite scroll. Because webtoons are designed to be read on mobile devices, they abandon traditional page flips in favor of a continuous vertical strip. This allows creators to use white space to control the reader’s pace, creating cinematic reveals as the user scrolls down.

Unlike manga, modern manhwa is almost always published in full color. The art style often leans toward a semi-realistic aesthetic, frequently incorporating digital 3D assets for backgrounds and architecture to maintain a high production value on a weekly schedule.

Additionally, manhwa follows the Western reading direction, left-to-right and top-to-bottom.

Manhwa vs manga: What’s the difference between manga and manhwa?

FEATURE

MANGA

MANHWA

Country of origin

Japan

South Korea

Reading direction

Right-to-left

Left-to-right

Primary medium

Print (magazines/books)

Digital and print

Color

Mostly black and white

Full color (digital)

Panel layout

Complex, multi-panel

Structured, horizontal

Popular titles

One Piece
Jujutsu Kaisen
Astro Boy

Solo Leveling
The Beginning After the End
Omniscient Reader

While manhwa vs manga share a common visual heritage, they have developed distinct identities rooted in their respective cultures and the technology used to read them.

The primary differences of manga vs manhwa lie in how a reader navigates the page, the use of color, and the intended medium of consumption.

The most noticeable difference between manhwa vs manga is the reading order.

Manga follows the traditional Japanese format, which is read from right to left and from the back of the book to the front. This applies to both the panels on a page and the speech bubbles within them. Manhwa, however, follows the Western standard of reading from left to right and top to bottom.

Manga is designed for the page-turn experience of a physical book, while modern manhwa is almost synonymous with the vertical scroll. Instead of flipping pages, manhwa readers often use a continuous downward motion on their smartphones, a layout specifically engineered for mobile devices rather than paper.

Credit: Kazuki Irodori

Manhwa vs manga: Color vs black and white

Color is perhaps the most striking visual divider between manhwa vs manga. Manga is traditionally a black-and-white medium. Artists use intricate ink work and grey screentones to create depth and mood.

In contrast, modern manhwa is almost exclusively produced in full color. Because the Korean industry pivoted to digital platforms early on, creators weren’t limited by the costs of color ink.

This results in vibrant, high-contrast visuals that often look more like a digital painting or an animation still than a traditional newspaper comic.

Manhwa vs manga: Artistic style and backgrounds

The art styles of manga vs manhwa also tend to diverge due to their production methods. Manga is famous for its hand-drawn feel and cinematic paneling that can vary wildly in shape and size to convey movement.

Manhwa often utilizes a semi-realistic digital style. Because many manhwa are released weekly in full color, artists frequently use 3D digital assets to render backgrounds, buildings, and complex objects, ensuring a polished, consistent look even on a tight deadline.

Manga t-shirts are now officially available through Manga Plus by Shueisha starting today!

The platform introduces a new feature that allows fans to turn their favorite manga pages into officially printed T-shirts.

The new feature lets users select a manga page directly from the platform and transform it into a custom-designed T-shirt.

WHERE TO READ YOUR FAVORITE TITLES

Where to read Jujutsu Kaisen manga online — all official sources

Where to read One Piece manga online — all official sources

This initiative expands how readers can experience manga beyond the screen, giving them a wearable way to celebrate the series and moments they love most.

Turn your favorite manga pages into manga t-shirts

Credit: Shueisha, Gege Akutami

What makes someone fall in love with a manga? For some, it’s the artwork that instantly leaves an impression. For others, it’s a line of dialogue so powerful it stays memorized forever.

With the new T-shirt maker feature, users can select eligible manga pages in any available language directly on the platform.

SEE ALSO: Where to read Jujutsu Kaisen Modulo: New sequel manga explained

Do note however, that the printed design will always feature the original Japanese artwork and text — the very first version that was published, and not translated versions. These magazine prints may also include promotional text or slight differences compared to translated digital editions.

For titles serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump, such as One Piece and Sakamoto Days, this means fans are getting the authentic magazine version of the page.

Over 270 supported manga titles, including major hits

Credit: Eiichiro Oda

As of writing, the feature supports more than 270 manga titles. This includes ongoing series like:

Spy x Family

Dandadan

And completed fan favorites such as:

However, not all titles or chapters are available for the manga t-shirts feature. Eligibility generally applies to:

Certain exclusions still apply depending on rights and publishing conditions. Most double-spread pages and color pages are also eligible for printing. However, page selection is limited to supported titles, chapters, and specific pages. Not every title or chapter qualifies.

Full list of eligible titles can be found here. Selectable pages within Manga Plus are clearly marked with a “Create” icon in the bottom right corner of the reader interface.

The t-shirt maker feature is available on both web and app versions of Manga Plus, allowing users worldwide to access it — with the exception of Japan, China, and Korea.

After selecting a page, users are redirected to an external checkout page where they can choose:

Four T-shirt colors: white, black, navy, and grey

Six sizes: S, M, L, XL, XXL, and XXXL

Each shirt is priced at US$39.99, excluding shipping and additional fees (which vary by country or region). The shirts are made to order in Japan, meaning delivery times.

According to Yuta Momiyama, Editor-in-Chief of Shonen Jump Plu: “We’re very excited to have this feature available for the Manga Plus fans. This feature is similar to the one we have here in Japan, and I believe it’s a really fun way to show your support for a manga you like.”

“It’s wonderful to live in an era where there are so many ways to express yourself and your love for something. I hope these t-shirts give people a new way to connect with manga and the stories they love.”

“Since they are made to order in Japan, depending on your location, it may take some time to arrive — but perhaps you can enjoy waiting while re-reading your favorite story,” he added.
