If you are looking for where to read the Kagurabachi manga legally, you are joining a fanbase that blew up before Chapter 1 even hit the press.

Long before its official serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump, Takeru Hokazono’s dark fantasy series became an overnight viral sensation.

Between record-breaking digital reads, massive physical sales, and a highly anticipated TV anime adaptation, it has officially earned its spot among the new generation of shonen hits.

Whether you want to catch up on the latest digital chapters online or collect the printed volumes for your shelf, diving into Chihiro’s journey has never been easier. If you are wondering where to read the Kagurabachi manga, here is every official, legal platform available today!

What is Kagurabachi about?

Kagurabachi is a dark-fantasy shonen manga written and illustrated by Takeru Hokazono, first serialized in Weekly Shonen Jump on September 19, 2023.

The story follows Chihiro Rokuhira, the son of a legendary swordsmith, who sets out on a bloody quest for revenge against the sorcerers who murdered his father and stole his family’s enchanted blades.

Credit: Takeru Hokazono

The series is built an enormous amount of hype before its debut through a viral, tongue-in-cheek meme campaign online. Unlike a lot of pre-release hype cycles, the manga actually delivered, quickly earning comparisons to Bleach, Jujutsu Kaisen, and Chainsaw Man thanks to its sharp swordplay, striking art, and grim revenge plot.

Kagurabachi is still an ongoing series, and as of writing it’s up to Chapter 127, with 11 tankobon volumes collected there so far.

The manga’s first part, Chapters 1 through 112, wrapped up in February 2026. Part 2 launched straight into a flashback arc covering the Seitei War and the origins of the Enchanted Blades.

Credit: Takeru Hokazono

The series took a short publication break between late June and late July 2026 so that creator Takeru Hokazono could rest, but it’s back on its regular weekly schedule as of Chapter 126.

A TV anime adaptation, produced by Cypic through CyberAgent and Shochiku, has also been confirmed for an April 2027 premiere, with Crunchyroll holding the worldwide streaming rights outside of Japan, mainland China, and Korea.

Where to read Kagurabachi manga online

New chapters of Kagurabachi are released simultaneously with Japan, so international readers aren’t stuck waiting for a fan translation.

Updated on July 28, 2026 at 11:47pm: Corrected a quote in the article for accuracy.

For many creators, the hardest part of building an art career isn’t mastering the tools—it’s keeping the creative well from running dry.

Speaking at AFA Creator Super Fest 2026 in Singapore, Japanese artist Yukoring offered fellow creators a refreshing alternative to standard technical panels, delivering a practical blueprint for sustaining an authentic creative voice.

BE INSPIRED BY PASSION HERE

Exclusive: She loves Rafayel so much, she made him her first-ever tattoo

Best known for her delicate watercolor portraits of contemporary Japanese girls, Yukoring has cultivated a distinct visual identity rooted in shoujo manga, anime, and games.

Credit: Amanda Tan/Fanstanza

Yet behind her dreamy aesthetic lies a disciplined philosophy centered on protecting original art, continually seeking real-world inspiration, and filtering every professional choice through a single guiding question.

Why original work is your best portfolio according to artist Yukoring

When artist Yukoring walked the audience through several of her physical watercolor pieces, she highlighted subtle artistic choices that digital screens simply cannot capture.

SEE ALSO: The ultimate guide to doujinshi: Meaning, types, and how to find them

In one 2024 illustration, she painted across two separate layers to create a sense of physical depth up close. In another, she embedded actual pieces of string to form the trails of meteors and shooting stars, creating a subtle three-dimensional effect.

Credit: @animefestasia on X

These physical details exist to strengthen the original worlds she builds, but for her, original work is far more than a technical exercise—it is the foundation of her entire business.

Rather than squeezing personal projects between commercial commissions, she views original art as the primary engine that drives her career forward.

Share your passion for fandom—follow Fanstanza on Telegram!

“By doing original works, it’s not just bringing my own point of view across,” she explained. “It also opens doors to client work and other commissions.”

The decision compass: Protecting your creative energy

Credit: @animefestasia on X

In an industry increasingly driven by algorithms, metrics, and client demands, it is easy for illustrators to lose control of their own artistic direction.

To guard her creative focus, Yukoring measures every professional opportunity—from contract negotiations to monitoring social media engagement—against her long-term vision. Before taking any action, she asks whether a choice actively serves her ability to keep drawing and pursuing her craft.

This clear boundary allows her to take on commercial projects without losing her core identity. It also gives her the freedom to step out of her comfort zone.

Credit: @animefestasia on X

While she openly admits her love for drawing cute girls, she has deliberately taken on client commissions featuring young male characters to stretch her abilities. By keeping her original vision at the center, commercial work and social media remain tools that serve her career, rather than pressures that dictate it.

“If there’s no input, there is no output”

Perhaps her most vital takeaway for creators is that art doesn’t begin at the drawing desk. Artist Yukoring strongly believes that staying creative requires constantly gathering new real-world experiences.

Looking at past master artists, she commented: “Paintings really are a reflection of the lives that they lived. I myself would like to make paintings that are a reflection of the life that I have lived.”

Credit: @animefestasia on X

To keep her visual vocabulary growing, Yukoring intentionally fills her life with new environments, travel, and cultural experiences.

Drawing inspiration from legendary ukiyo-e master Hokusai—who famously relocated dozens of times to refresh his perspective—she recently moved from Osaka to Tokyo to expose herself to new ideas.

Whether exploring the National Gallery Singapore or attending a Kabuki performance for the first time—one that directly inspired a collaborative exhibition in her signature watercolor style—she treats outside experiences as essential fuel. Without actively seeking fresh input, an artist’s output inevitably runs dry.

Three principles behind artist Yukoring’s creative life

Credit: @animefestasia on X

Throughout her talk, artist Yukoring distilled her philosophy into three guiding principles that have shaped both her career and creative process:

Prioritise your original works

Take control of your own creative journey

Seek inspiration from the world around you

Together, they form the foundation of how artist Yukoring approaches every painting, commission, and career decision.

Rather than chasing trends or relying solely on talent, her message was that a sustainable creative life is built through protecting your own voice, staying open to new experiences, and making deliberate choices that allow you to keep creating.

At AFA Creator Super Fest 2026 (AFA CSF) in Singapore, Japanese painter and illustrator 優子鈴 (Yukoring) didn’t spend her session talking about brushes, software, or industry secrets.

Instead, she shared the deeply personal story behind her career — one that began with choosing art despite being told it wasn’t a realistic future.

BE MOVED BY ONE MORE INSPIRATIONAL STORY

Exclusive: She loves Rafayel so much, she made him her first-ever tattoo

For the Osaka-born artist, drawing was never just a hobby, it was a sanctuary. “When I’m drawing or painting, I’m able to forget the pressures of my life,” Yukoring told the audience. “I feel that my heart and mind are free.”

Credit: @animefestasia on X

But while her early years were filled with shoujo manga and the roots of her signature watercolor style, her family envisioned a far more conventional future, dismissing an artistic career as unrealistic.

Yukoring was pressured to play it safe

Facing heavy parental pressure for stability, Yukoring initially did what was expected. She studied hard, prepared for university, and kept her passion on the sidelines, trying to accept art as a secondary comfort rather than a viable life path.

“I’ve been told that having a career in art is not a realistic thing,” Yukoring said.

Credit: @animefestasia on X

“Because my parents had strong opinions on what I should be in the future, they were actually not very supportive of my art,” she explained. “Even if I loved drawing, I wasn’t sure if this was something I could do for work in the future.”

Share your passion for fandom—follow Fanstanza on Telegram!

The moment everything changed

Then, everything shifted during her third year of high school.

Looking back, Yukoring described it as an “explosive” moment — not because anything dramatic happened around her, but because something fundamentally changed within her.

Credit: @animefestasia on X

“Just like my peers, I worked hard in school and then I had a goal of entering university with them,” Yukoring recalled. “However… I had a revelation. If I continue in this path, then I will never get the chance to do whatever I really wanted, and it will be all over for me.”

For the first time, she realized that following the expected path meant giving up the life she truly wanted.

SEE ALSO: Discover manga the magazine way: 12 countries, 5 top publishers, endless titles

“So in my heart of hearts, I decided something has to change,” she continued. “Of course, there was a lot of anxiety with this decision. Not only was I unsure that this path would be a successful one for me, a lot of my loved ones also did not agree with my decision.”

Credit: @animefestasia on X

Choosing art meant accepting uncertainty. There were no guarantees, no clear roadmap, and no assurance that things would work out.

Still, one thought outweighed her every fear: “I thought that for me to be able to have a wonderful, peaceful existence, I really had to go with my own choice. So I decided that once and for all, I wasn’t going to live for other people, but just do it for myself.”

Choosing art without a roadmap

Deciding to pursue art didn’t instantly make Yukoring a professional illustrator. “When I made this decision, I didn’t have a clear plan on how to proceed,” she admitted. “But one thing remained the same: I want to keep drawing.”

Credit: @animefestasia on X

Looking back, that single choice reshaped her entire life—from her daily workflow to where she lived.

Yet, as she noted, lasting change comes from the choices that follow. “Life isn’t changed by one minor decision,” she explained. “It’s the accumulation of the number of small decisions that you make.”

For Yukoring, those daily choices shape everything from the commissions she accepts to how she navigates social media metrics.

Credit: @animefestasia on X

Whenever a new opportunity or challenge arises, she evaluates it against a single guiding question: “Will this choice lead to a life of me still drawing and going about with my dream?”

It is a simple metric, but it has become the compass guiding every step of her career.

“Perseverance does not require special talent”

Yukoring doesn’t credit her success to extraordinary talent, but to quiet consistency. “Perseverance does not require special talent,” she shared. “My knowledge is the cumulative effort of making small decisions each and every day.”

It is a philosophy that reframes artistic success not as a rare gift, but as a daily practice of choosing to create even when the path forward is uncertain.

Closing her session, she encouraged the AFA Creator Super Fest audience to reflect on their own priorities. “I’ve shared a small bit of my own experiences,” she said, “but I’m sure each one of you has your own set of values that you hold dear to your heart. I’d be genuinely happy even if just a small portion of my talk has remained with you today.”

For anyone questioning whether they belong on a creative path, Yukoring’s journey offers a grounding truth: you don’t need a perfect plan or external approval. Sometimes, all it takes is deciding to stop living for other people—and continuing to make that choice, one day at a time.

Updated on July 27, 2026 at 5:59pm: Added more details on where can I read doujinshi, including additional physical retailer options.

You’re deep into your favorite anime or manga series, and suddenly someone mentions doujinshi like it’s common knowledge.

If you’re left wondering what’s a doujinshi and why fans keep bringing it up, you’re not alone—it’s one of those terms that’s everywhere in fan spaces but rarely explained outside them.

LEARN RELATED LORE

What is it about yaoi that girls can’t get enough of?
At its core, doujinshi sits in a category all its own, separate from the licensed manga on your shelf and different from the fan fiction you’d find posted online. It’s tied to a self-publishing culture that’s existed in Japan for decades, one with its own events, retailers, and unwritten rules—and one that more than a few now-famous manga artists got their start in.

Credit: Comiket Japan

In this guide, we’ll break down what’s a doujinshi, the different forms it takes, how it differs from the manga and fan fiction you already know, and where you can actually go to read it for yourself.

What’s a doujinshi?

It’s a term that comes up constantly in manga and anime fan spaces, but what’s a doujinshi exactly?

Share your passion for fandom—follow Fanstanza on Telegram!

Doujinshi is the term for self-published, independently created manga and comics made by hobbyist artists rather than mainstream publishing companies.

It’s built from two Japanese words:

doujin (同人), which translates roughly to “fellow enthusiast” or “someone in the same circle,” and

shi (誌), meaning “publication”

Credit: Seijun

Put together, it describes work made by and for a community of people who share the same passion.

To really understand what’s a doujinshi, it helps to look at where it came from. Modern doujinshi culture developed in Japan in the 1970s, growing alongside the rise of manga and anime fandoms. As fans looked for ways to become more deeply involved with their favorite series, self-publishing became a popular creative outlet.

This movement gained major momentum with the founding of Comiket (Comic Market) in December 1975, a small gathering of just 32 circles and around 700 attendees that has since grown into the largest doujinshi convention in the world, drawing hundreds of thousands of attendees each year.

Credit: EOY

Notably, several well-known professional manga artists got their start creating doujinshi before entering the mainstream industry. This includes Ken Akamatsu (Love Hina) and Kiyohiko Azuma (Azumanga Daioh, Yotsuba).

Types of doujinshi

Now that you know what’s a doujinshi, it helps to see how varied it can actually be. Doujinshi can be classified by where the story comes from and by the kind of content it features.

TYPE

CATEGORY

DESCRIPTION

Aniparo (Parody)

Origin

Based on existing anime, manga, or game characters. This is the most common and widely produced type.

Original (Sousaku)

Origin

Entirely original characters, settings, and stories, not tied to any existing franchise.

Yaoi / Boys’ Love (BL)

Genre

Male to male romance, typically created by and for female fans.

Yuri / Girls’ Love (GL)

Genre

Female-to-female romance.

Hentai / Ero (H-doujinshi)

Genre

Sexually explicit content, often based on existing characters.

Furry / kemono

Genre

Anthropomorphic animal characters, sometimes overlapping with yaoi/yuri themes.

Gag / comedy

Tone

Absurd, silly, or crack-humor stories meant purely for laughs.

Honobono (heartwarming)

Tone

Light, wholesome, slice-of-life stories with a gentle tone.

Serious / drama

Tone

Stories that treat their subject matter with emotional weight, closer to angst or drama.

Credit: Koshianko

It is important to note that this isn’t a complete list. Doujinshi culture has many more niche subtypes and terms (like anthologies, novels-only doujinshi, or critique/meta works). These are simply the most common and widely recognized categories you’ll encounter as a reader.

Doujinshi vs. manga vs. fan fiction

Now that you know what’s a doujinshi, let’s explore how it differs from regular manga or Western-style fan fiction. The distinctions come down to who creates the work, how it’s published, and where it falls legally.

Manga refers to professionally published comics that go through an official publishing house, complete with editors, printing deals, and distribution through bookstores or licensed digital platforms. Manga creators are typically paid professionals working within an established industry system.

Credit: Miika Laaksonen

Doujinshi, by contrast, is self-published — created, funded, and distributed by the artist or a small “circle” without any official publisher involved. While doujinshi can be entirely original, a large portion are parody works based on existing manga, anime, or games, sold at conventions like AFA, Comiket or through specialty stores.

Fan fiction is similar to parody doujinshi in spirit. Both are unofficial, fan-made stories based on someone else’s characters or world.

The key difference is format and culture: fan fiction is usually written text shared for free online (on sites like AO3 or Wattpad), while doujinshi is typically illustrated, printed, and sold for profit, especially in Japan, where a more established commercial ecosystem exists around fan-made work.

ASPECT

DOUJINSHI

MANGA

FAN FICTION

Creator

Amateur/independent artist or circle

Professional artist, backed by a publisher

Amateur writer (usually unpaid)

Publishing

Self-published, sold at conventions/stores

Published through a commercial publishing house

Self-posted online, typically free

Content origin

Original or based on existing works

Usually original (licensed IP)

Almost always based on existing works

Monetization

Often sold for profit

Sold commercially

Rarely monetized

Legal status

Gray area, tolerated in Japan

Fully licensed and legal

Gray area, generally tolerated

Where can I read doujinshi?

Credit: Akihito Tsukushi

If you’re wondering where can I read doujinshi, the answer isn’t as simple as opening a mainstream manga app. Since these are independently published works, they’re scattered across niche marketplaces and specialty retailers rather than centralized on one big platform. Here’s where readers typically find them, both online and in physical stores.

Where can I read doujinshi digitally?

DLsite is generally regarded as the biggest digital storefront for doujin content, offering hundreds of thousands of titles spanning doujinshi, games, and audio works.

Since it caters to an international audience, it offers an English interface and lets you download purchases directly, making it one of the easier entry points for readers outside Japan.

Credit: Melonbooks Inc.

Pixiv, primarily known as an artist community and portfolio platform, is also a common place to discover doujinshi previews or even full releases.

Many creators pair their Pixiv presence with Pixiv FANBOX, a subscription-style tool that lets fans pay a monthly fee for exclusive content, including full digital doujinshi releases.

Where can I read doujinshi? Physical retailers

If you’re still asking yourself where can I read doujinshi in person, physical retailers are a great place to start.

Melonbooks and Toranoana are the two biggest names in doujinshi retail, connecting independent creators with readers through both physical stores and online storefronts. They offer an extensive selection and are well trusted within the community.

Credit: Hiromi Takashima

Alice Books is a smaller specialty retailer focused specifically on doujinshi and related merchandise, often favored by collectors.

Mandarake, best known for secondhand and collectible goods, also carries a notable doujinshi inventory — a useful stop if you’re hunting for older or out-of-print titles.

Animate, while primarily a general anime merchandise chain, also stocks new doujinshi releases and plays a role in the wider official distribution network.

For those who still want to know where can I read doujinshi without going digital, BOOKOFF, Japan’s largest secondhand bookstore chain, occasionally carries used doujinshi alongside its manga and book selection. Stock varies a lot by branch, so it’s more of an “if you stumble on it” option than a reliable source.

K-Books is another major chain worth checking out, known for its dedicated doujinshi floor in Ikebukuro, Japan (part of the famous Otome Road strip). It’s been a staple in Japan’s otaku retail scene for over three decades, dealing primarily in secondhand doujinshi and otaku goods.

Scroll through any anime fan community long enough and you’ll start noticing a certain type of fan.

They’re usually the loudest in the comments, the most dedicated shippers, and the ones turning every male friendship into a love story before the first episode is even over.

They call themselves fujoshi—it’s not just a labelor millions of fans around the world, it’s an identity.

So what is fujoshi and what is fudanshi, exactly, and why has this corner of fandom culture grown into something so globally recognized?

Credit: Catgirlmutant on Unsplash

What is fujoshi?

The term fujoshi comes from Japan, where it became popular in the early 2000s as the internet and otaku culture began to boom.

Translated literally, fujoshi means “rotten girl” — a tongue-in-cheek label that the community actually reclaimed and made their own. Far from being an insult, most fujoshi use the term proudly and with a lot of humor.

So what is a fujoshi fan, exactly? A fujoshi is a female fan who loves Boys’ Love (BL) content at its core, though the term has expanded over time. This includes yaoi manga, BL anime, slash fanfiction, and any story that centers on a romantic or emotional relationship between two male characters.

Credit: Media Factory

While fujoshi started as a distinctly Japanese term, it has since gone global. Today, it applies to BL fans across all cultures and languages. If you love BL, the label fits regardless of where you’re from.

What makes fujoshi culture particularly interesting is the way fans deal with media that wasn’t necessarily designed to be romantic at all, finding chemistry and subtext between male characters in mainstream anime, movies, and even video games.

This kind of fan engagement isn’t unique to Japanese media either — fujoshi around the world apply the same lens to Korean dramas, Western TV shows, and everything in between.

Credit: GIHO

What is fujoshi culture without its community, though? That’s really where it comes alive.

Fujoshi fans are known for being deeply passionate, wildly creative, and chronically online. Fan art, doujinshi (self-published fan comics), fanfiction, and endless discussion threads are all part of how fujoshi take part in the stories and characters they love.

The fujoshi fandom originated in Japan but has since spread worldwide, finding massive audiences in East Asia, Latin America, Europe, and beyond. Several platforms have given fujoshi communities a global stage, including Twitter/X, TikTok, and AO3.

What is fudanshi and what is a fudanshi, exactly?

But the Boys Love fandom isn’t a girls-only club. Enter the fudanshi.

Credit: Lawrence Crayton on Unsplash

The term fudanshi is essentially the male equivalent of fujoshi, which is a male who loves Boys’ Love content: yaoi manga and manhwa, BL anime, and everything that comes with it.

Just like fujoshi, fudanshi are fans who are drawn to romantic and emotional stories between male characters. The difference is simply gender.

Where fujoshi traditionally refers to female fans, fudanshi refers to male fans who enjoy the same genre. The word itself follows the same logic — “fudanshi” swaps the kanji for “girl” (女子) with the kanji for “boy” (男子), keeping the same “rotten” prefix that the fujoshi community made famous.

Credit: Chada

For a long time, male BL fans were a quieter presence in fandom spaces — not because they didn’t exist, but because the genre was so heavily associated with a female audience that many fudanshi fans kept it to themselves.

However, that started to change as BL went mainstream and fandom culture became more open. Today, fudanshi are a recognized and celebrated part of the BL community.

What is fujoshing?

If fujoshi is the term, then fujoshing is the verb. Fujoshing is what fujoshi actually do when they watch, read, or play something and start seeing romantic potential between male characters that the original creators never explicitly intended.

Credit: @BLUELOCK_MOVIE on X

It is the act of looking at a friendship, a rivalry, a mentor-student dynamic, or even a single meaningful glance between two male characters and thinking, there’s something there.

It doesn’t matter if the source material is a shonen anime (Blue Lock, ahem ahem), a Hollywood action movie, or a video game. If there are two male characters with chemistry, fujoshing is already happening somewhere in the fandom.

You’ll usually encounter the term fujoshing in online fan spaces like Twitter/X, Tumblr, TikTok, Reddit, and fan forums. Someone might post a clip from a sports anime and caption it “I can’t stop fujoshing this show,” or a fan might admit in a thread that they went into a movie just to fujoshi the two male leads.

Credit: Toei Animation

It’s used with a lot of self-awareness and humor, which is very on-brand for fujoshi culture overall.

What makes fujoshing interesting is that it’s not really about the content itself, but about how fans engage with it.

When you think about what is fujoshing all about, it is a creative act. It’s the foundation of fan art, fanfiction, and doujinshi. It’s what turns a completely platonic anime into a fandom obsession overnight.

The Fujoshi and Fudanshi culture today

Credit: Kazuki Irodori

Fujoshi and fudanshi culture have come a long way from their origins in early 2000s Japanese internet forums.

A lot of that has to do with how mainstream BL has become. Boys’ Love content is no longer tucked away in the corners of manga shops or fan convention tables.

Anime adaptations of BL manga are getting proper studio treatment and wide releases. Live-action Thai and Chinese BL dramas in particular, are a phenomenon of their own. These markets even adapt other Asian-produced works into live-action, such as Payback, which is based on a Korean manhwa.

<img loading="lazy" decoding="async" width="1024" height="576" src="https://fanstanza-gg-prod.s3.amazonaws.com/wp-content/uploads/2026/03/go-for-it-nakamura-kun-okuto-nakamura-aiki-hirose-clutching-chest-red-background-1024x576.jpg" alt="Okuto Nakamura clutching his chest with a flustered look on his face in Go For It, Nakamura-kun!!.
Online platforms have played a huge role in bringing fujoshi and fudanshi fans together across borders and languages. A fan in Brazil, a fan in the Philippines, and a fan in Germany can all be fujoshing the same show at the same time by sharing fan art, writing fanfiction, and building a community around the same characters and ships.

What’s also shifted is the openness around the identity itself. Fujoshi and fudanshi fans are increasingly unapologetic about what they love, bringing a playful, down-to-earth energy that makes the community genuinely welcoming to newcomers.

On the anime side, titles like Go For It, Nakamura-kun! capture exactly the kind of sweet, sincere BL storytelling that keeps fujoshi and fudanshi communities passionate and growing.

BL isn’t a niche anymore—and neither are the fans who make it what it is.

If you’ve spent any time in anime and manga spaces, you’ve probably come across the yaoi genre and noticed that its fanbase is largely made up of girls. A lot of girls, actually.

It raises the question “Why do girls like yaoi?” and the real reasons run a lot deeper than just “pretty boys.”

GO DEEPER AND EXPAND YOUR HEARTS

The 5 best Boys Love manga on Kobo that deserve a spot in your library

Where to read Boys Love manga: All best apps and sites

So what is it about two guys falling in love on screen that captivates millions of female readers and viewers worldwide? The answer is more interesting than you’d think.

What is yaoi? The origin of the Boys’ Love genre

Credit: Lerche

To understand why girls love yaoi, it helps to know what the genre is and where it came from.

Yaoi is a genre of manga, anime, and fan fiction that centers on romantic and sexual relationships between male characters.

The word itself is an acronym from the Japanese phrase “yama nashi, ochi nashi, imi nashi,” which loosely translates to “no climax, no resolution, no meaning.”

Credit: Shikke

It was originally a self-deprecating joke used by doujinshi (self-published fan comic) creators in the 1970s and 80s, poking fun at stories that were light on plot but heavy on romance.

The genre grew out of shoujo manga circles, where female artists began creating stories that centered on emotional intimacy and male relationships in ways that mainstream manga simply wasn’t offering at the time.

Over time, it evolved and branched into what fans now commonly refer to as Boys’ Love, or BL, around the world.

Today, BL is the dominant term both in Japan and globally. Yaoi originally referred to more explicit, plot-light doujinshi content, while BL became the umbrella term for the broader commercial genre covering everything from sweet romances to mature stories.

In practice, the line between the two has blurred significantly over the years. Most fans and Japanese publishers now use BL as the default. If you hear someone say “yaoi,” they likely mean BL in the broader sense since the terms are used interchangeably more often than not.

Who reads yaoi? A look at the fujoshi culture

A lot of people read yaoi, but the genre’s biggest and most dedicated fanbase is overwhelmingly made up of women and girls.

Credit: Fujoking

In Japanese culture, female yaoi fans are called fujoshi, which literally translates to “rotten girl” — a tongue-in-cheek label that the community has largely embraced and reclaimed with pride.

Male fans of the genre are called fudanshi, and while they’re the minority, they’re a part of the fanbase too.

These terms have since been globalized, finding a permanent home in the international community’s vocabulary.

However, being a fujoshi isn’t just about reading yaoi or BL. It’s a whole identity within the fandom, one that comes with its own humor, its own vocabulary, and its own set of deeply held opinions about ships, story tropes, and character dynamics.

Credit: Studio Deen

Fujoshi are known for being passionate, creative, and vocal, and they’ve been a driving force behind the global spread of BL culture.

Together, fujoshi and fudanshi communities have built a fandom that spans continents, languages, and platforms, from manga forums and fan fiction archives to social media and convention culture.

What might surprise most people is just how global the yaoi and BL fanbase is. From Southeast Asia to Latin America to Europe, BL has found passionate audiences far beyond Japan. In Thailand, the genre has influenced mainstream television, giving rise to an entire industry of BL live-action dramas with massive international viewership.

Why do girls like yaoi?

Credit: Meguru Hinohara

Why do girls like yaoi? The answer doesn’t lie in just one thing. Girls are drawn to yaoi for many reasons. These reasons may vary from person to person, but a few common themes come up again and again.

Breaking free from female stereotypes

One of the biggest reasons is the freedom from female stereotypes. In most mainstream romances, the female lead tends to follow a familiar script.

She’s passive, she waits, she’s defined largely by her relationship with the male lead. Yaoi removes that entirely.

There’s no female character to project onto, which gives female readers more freedom. They can enjoy the romance on its own terms, without the baggage of gender expectations getting in the way.

Credit: Lerche

A different kind of romantic dynamic

Because both characters in a yaoi story are male, the relationship doesn’t automatically fall into the familiar push-and-pull of heterosexual romance.

This opens the door to a different kind of romantic tension, one where both characters have to actively explore vulnerability, power, and intimacy on their own terms.

So for readers who care more about how two people fall in love, yaoi delivers that in a way that a lot of other genres don’t, with emotional tension like no other.

The appeal of bishounen character design

Credit: Yamane Ayano

A big part of yaoi’s visual appeal comes down to its roots in shoujo manga, a genre known for its expressive, beautifully drawn characters.

Bishounen, which literally translates to “beautiful boy,” is a character archetype that has been central to the genre from the very beginning. These characters are drawn with intention — delicate features, expressive eyes, and emotions worn openly on their faces.

For many readers, this visual language is highly appealing, and it’s a big part of what makes picking up a yaoi or BL title so inviting because they are drawn in a very similar art style.

Exploring mature themes safely

Credit: Kazuki Irodori

For some girls, yaoi also offers a safe space to explore themes of desire, identity, and relationships from a distance.

Because the story isn’t about them directly, there’s a layer of separation that makes it easier to engage with complex or intense emotions without it feeling too personal.

This distance can be especially meaningful when the themes being explored are ones that feel difficult or vulnerable to confront head-on, like questions about attraction, identity, or what you want from a relationship.

Credit: SuBLime

Experiencing these themes through fictional characters creates a buffer that makes the exploration feel lower stakes, while still being genuinely emotionally engaging.

After all, fiction has always been a space where readers and viewers work through things they can’t always put into words.

Yaoi creates a safe community for women

Beyond the stories themselves, yaoi comes with a community. Being a yaoi or BL fan means being part of a creative and deeply passionate fandom, one full of fan art, fan fiction, heated shipping debates, and people who get emotional about fictional couples.

Credit: Studio Deen

Many in the community who consume BL stories are also big consumers of their official fan merch. Some exclusive merch are localized in their country of origin, while others can be bought online. As a result, online Group Order Manage (GOMs) are commonplace.

In Singapore for example, GOMs are typically conducted in community-run Fandom Telegram Channels which creates another layer of subculture within the BL fandom.

This explains why for a lot of girls, the social experience of being a yaoi fan is just as appealing as the genre itself.

Credit: Satelight

It’s also worth saying that sometimes, the reason girls like yaoi is simply because they are good stories. BL as a genre has produced some genuinely moving, beautifully written narratives about longing, acceptance, and love that would resonate with anyone, regardless of who the characters are.

Recommended yaoi titles for beginners

New to yaoi and not sure where to start? Here are some of the best titles to ease you into the genre.

Yaoi manga for beginners

Credit: Lerche

YAOI MANGA TITLE

YAOI MANGA DESCRIPTION

Given

The manga that the anime is based on is worth reading for the extended story and stunning artwork.

Cherry Magic!

A lighthearted, feel-good story about a man who accidentally gains the ability to read minds through touch and discovers his coworker has feelings for him.

Our Dreams at Dusk

A quiet, thoughtful story touching on identity and belonging alongside its romance.

So, why do girls like yaoi? As it turns out, the answer is anything but simple.

At its core, yaoi tells stories about love, vulnerability, and human connection. And great stories have a way of finding their audience, regardless of who they’re about.

One Piece is a shonen manga series written and illustrated by mangaka Eiichiro Oda. The story first set sail on July 22, 1997 when it was published in Shueisha’s Weekly Shonen Jump magazine.

It follows Monkey D. Luffy, a cheerful man who gains the permanent properties of rubber after accidentally eating a Devil Fruit. Inspired by his childhood idol, the pirate Red-Haired Shanks, Luffy sets out on a journey across the ocean to assemble his own crew called the Straw Hat Pirates.

Their ultimate goal is to explore the treacherous, unpredictable waters of the Grand Line, defeat formidable rivals, and claim the One Piece. Whoever finds this hidden treasure left behind by Gol D. Roger will claim the title of the Pirate King.

Beyond its storytelling, One Piece is a massive commercial success. It holds the official Guinness World Record for the most copies published for the same comic book series by a single author. With over 600 million copies in circulation worldwide, it is the best-selling manga series in history.

This success turned the manga into a global franchise with adaptations across almost every medium. Toei Animation’s anime adaptation has been running since 1999 with over 1,000 episodes, alongside numerous feature films like the box-office hit One Piece Film: Red.

In 2023, Netflix released a highly successful live-action series that topped global streaming charts.

How to read One Piece manga panels correctly

If you are transitioning from Western comic books or graphic novels, the layout of the One Piece manga looks backward at first glance. It is important to remember that traditional Japanese manga is read from:

right side of the page to the left, and

from top to bottom.

To follow the story, always start with the panel in the upper-right corner of the page. Read across the row to the left, and once you reach the edge, drop down to the rightmost panel of the row below.

Dialogue bubbles and narration boxes follow this same directional flow. Within any single panel, read the text bubbles starting from the highest and rightmost one, moving downward and to the left.

How to read One Piece manga correctly and in chronological order

Credit: Eiichiro Oda/Shueisha

One Piece follows a completely linear story. There are no side-stories or alternate universes to track. If you want to know how to read One Piece manga correctly, simply start at Chapter 1 and read straight through to the latest release.

The timeline is divided into major narrative blocks called Sagas, which are further broken down into individual story arcs:

East Blue Saga (Chapters 1–100): Luffy gathers his initial crew members and sets out for the Grand Line.

Alabasta Saga (Chapters 101–217): The crew explores the Grand Line to save a desert kingdom from a criminal syndicate.

Sky Island Saga (Chapters 218–302): The Straw Hats search for a legendary lost city hidden above the clouds.

Water 7 / Enies Lobby Saga (Chapters 303–441): The crew clashes with World Government assassins to rescue one of their own.

Thriller Bark Saga (Chapters 442–489): A horror-themed voyage into a massive ghost ship ruled by a shadow-stealing warlord.

Summit War Saga (Chapters 490–597): The crew is separated, and Luffy races to stop a high-profile global execution.

Fish-Man Island Saga (Chapters 598–653): Following a two-year training period, the reunited crew journeys deep beneath the ocean.

Dressrosa Saga (Chapters 654–801): A pirate alliance forms to take down an underground black-market kingpin.

Whole Cake Island Saga (Chapters 802–908): A daring rescue mission into the dangerous territory of an Emperor of the Sea.

Wano Country Saga (Chapters 909–1057): A massive conflict to liberate an isolated nation from a tyrannical ruler.

Final Saga (Chapters 1058–Present): The ultimate stretch of the story, beginning with the revelations on Egghead Island.

Jujutsu Kaisen Season 4 continues the Culling Game and moves the story into its most decisive phase.

In examining who dies in Jujutsu Kaisen Season 4, it’s important to note that this portion of the story includes major spoilers based on the manga.

GET ANSWERS TO YOUR DEEPEST QUESTIONS

Maki vs Toji: Who’s actually stronger in Jujutsu Kaisen?
Unlike earlier arcs that focus on setup, this part centers on direct confrontations where outcomes are immediate and permanent.

Several key characters fall during this stretch, with deaths tied directly to high-level battles. These events also set the stage for the transition into the Shinjuku Showdown arc.

Yuki Tsukumo death

Credit: MAPPA, Toho Animation, Shueisha, Gege Akutami, Crunchyroll

Yuki Tsukumo, one of the four special grade sorcerers, fights Kenjaku alongside Choso to protect Master Tengen. Her cursed technique allows her to add mass to herself and her shikigami, giving her enough force to pressure him early in the fight.

Despite this, Kenjaku’s versatility and control over multiple cursed techniques allow him to adapt. He counters Yuki using gravity-based abilities, limiting her movements and forcing her into a prolonged exchange.

SEE ALSO: The 5 strongest Culling Game characters in Jujutsu Kaisen

As the fight reaches its peak, Yuki sustains fatal injuries but continues fighting. She pushes her technique to its limit in a final attempt to take Kenjaku down with her.

The attack fails to kill him, and Yuki dies from the damage she sustains, marking the loss of a special grade sorcerer and a major shift in power.

Ryu Ishigori death

Ryu Ishigori returns after the Sendai Colony arc and later encounters Sukuna. Known for having the highest cursed energy output among players, Ryu enters the fight expecting a direct clash.

However, the gap in strength is immediate. Sukuna reads Ryu’s abilities quickly and counters without difficulty.

The fight ends almost instantly, with Sukuna killing Ryu in a single decisive attack. His death highlights the scale of Sukuna’s power and reinforces the shift toward endgame-level threats.

The latter half of the Culling Game is defined by direct combat between high-level sorcerers and reincarnated players.

Unlike earlier arcs, deaths here are not the result of large-scale incidents but of decisive one-on-one battles. The following table lists the major confirmed deaths expected to be adapted in Season 4.

Episode numbers will be added once Season 4 airs and the anime confirms the exact placement of each death.

We expect the events of Season 4 to transition directly into the Shinjuku Showdown arc. In the context of who dies in Jujutsu Kaisen Season 4, this transition is important, as the deaths that occur during the latter half of the Culling Game directly shape the matchups and stakes that follow.

With the major players established and several key characters already falling, the story moves toward its final stage.

The focus shifts away from the structure of the Culling Game and into a more direct conflict involving the strongest remaining characters, setting up the series’ endgame.

Updated on May 25, 2026 at 12:10am: Kei Urana deleted her X account on May 24. Links to her posts have been removed.

Gachiakuta author Kei Urana has addressed the ongoing issue of manga piracy head-on, following a question from a fan that quickly escalated into a wider debate online.

The sequence of events began on April 16, 2026 when a fan asked Urana on X (formerly Twitter) whether it was legal to read Gachiakuta through Discord—implying the existence of channels where chapters are uploaded and shared for free.

USE THESE PLATFORMS INSTEAD

Discover manga the magazine way: 12 countries, 5 top publishers, endless titles

How to get free coins on Webtoon: Legitimate ways to earn, save, and maximize

The original post has since been deleted, but Urana’s reply was direct and unambiguous.

“That is illegal,” she responded.

Gachiakuta author speaks out on illegal manga reading

Credit: Bones Film, Kei Urana

What might have ended as a brief clarification instead sparked a broader conversation about piracy, accessibility, and the value of creative work—one Urana chose to address in detail.

In a follow-up statement posted today, April 21, 2026, Urana explained that she had spent several days researching the issue across different countries, including the financial realities many readers face.

SEE ALSO: You can now create your own manga t-shirts with iconic panels from Shonen Jump

She acknowledged that, for some, piracy is not simply a choice but a limitation. She said she understands “that for many people, pirate sites are the only way they can read manga,” adding that she is aware prices can be significantly higher overseas.

Urana also noted that some fans had discouraged her from even raising the topic. However, she pushed back on that idea, arguing that silence carries its own consequences.

Credit: Miika Laaksonen

“If we do not speak up now, the value of Japanese manga and creative works… will be wasted,” she wrote in English with the aid of a translation app.

Her statement frames piracy not just as a legal issue, but as something that could erode the long-term cultural and creative value of the medium itself.

Challenging the “free doesn’t hurt sales” manga piracy argument

Urana also directly addressed a common claim within piracy discussions—that reading manga for free does not negatively impact sales.

She firmly rejected that notion.

“That is not true. ‘Free’ lowers the value of things.”

According to Urana, once audiences grow accustomed to free access, they may stop seeking out legitimate versions altogether.

At the same time, she acknowledged that dedicated fans who truly love a series often choose to support it properly.

Still, her core concern goes beyond revenue alone. As she explained, while compensation matters, she is equally focused on preserving the perceived worth of the work itself.

Efforts to improve legal access to manga and ongoing challenges

Despite her strong stance against piracy, Urana emphasized that she is not ignoring the accessibility problem.

She revealed that she and collaborator Hideyoshi Ando have been exploring ways to make their work more available to readers who cannot afford it or lack access through official channels.

While she did not share specifics, the Gachiakuta author confirmed that ideas are actively being considered.

Publishers, she added, are also working toward solutions—though progress takes time.Urana asked fans for patience, noting that delays should not be met with hostility.

She specifically addressed criticism she has seen online, including accusations of racism and claims that piracy acts as “free promotion.”

She described such arguments as misguided, urging readers to consider the perspective of creators and the cultural context behind their work.

A personal note on creating Gachiakuta

Urana also took a moment to reflect on the creative process behind Gachiakuta. While she originally intended to create manga independently—and remains the primary artist—she ultimately chose to collaborate with Ando.

She cited both his artistic talent and his ideas on how to bring a work to audiences as key reasons for the partnership.

It’s a reminder that manga creation is rarely a solo effort, and that the final product reflects contributions from multiple voices working toward a shared vision.

Shogi takes center stage at the Asian Civilizations Museum (ACM) as the institution refreshes its landmark exhibition, Let’s Play! The Art and Design of Asian Games, blending history, strategy, and pop culture into a timely cultural moment.

The exhibition arrives alongside a significant milestone: the museum’s acquisition of a historic championship game table, donated by the Singapore Weiqi Association.

HOW FAR IS ANIME’S REACH?

The Weeknd’s anime obsession runs deep — here’s what inspired House of Balloons

At the same time, ACM introduces a new showcase: Shogi in Manga: March Comes in Like a Lion, presented in partnership with the Japan Shogi Association to commemorate 60 years of Singapore–Japan diplomatic relations.

Shogi in manga: Where strategy meets storytelling

Running alongside the main exhibition, “Shogi in Manga: March Comes in Like a Lion” introduces visitors to shogi, Japan’s centuries-old strategy game, through the lens of contemporary storytelling.

Credit: Studio Pierrot, Masashi Kishimoto

A traditional Japanese strategy board game often described as a more dynamic counterpart to chess, shogi allows captured pieces to be reused by the opponent. With centuries of history, it blends deep tactical thinking with cultural significance, and remains a major professional sport in Japan today.

This intellectual depth has also made shogi a familiar presence in Japanese pop culture, most notably in Naruto, where Shikamaru Nara is often seen playing the game as a reflection of his calm, highly strategic mindset and genius-level planning in battle.

ENJOY THIS, FELLOW INTELLECTUAL

Liar Game anime review: Does the long-awaited adaptation live up to the hype?

The exhibition is inspired by the acclaimed series March Comes in Like a Lion by Chica Umino, a critically acclaimed Japanese manga first serialized in Japan in 2007, later adapted into an anime that aired from 2016 to 2018.

The story follows a young professional shogi player navigating competition, loneliness, and personal growth, offering one of the most thoughtful portrayals of the game in modern pop culture.

Credit: Fanstanza

“As someone who promotes Japanese culture, I am particularly excited that this showcase brings together two cultural treasures,” said Akiko Kawabe, Director of Japan Creative Centre, Embassy of Japan in Singapore.

“This showcase brings together two cultural treasures – Japan’s shogi and manga – beautifully demonstrating Japanese games and culture,” she added.

SEE ALSO: You can now create your own manga t-shirts with iconic panels from Shonen Jump

Visitors can explore life-sized character panels, a manga reading corner, and digital scenes that highlight the journey of a young professional shogi player. The experience is designed to resonate particularly with younger audiences encountering the game for the first time.

A historic table: Singapore’s weiqi milestone

At the heart of the refreshed exhibition is the Ing Cup championship table, first used during the final two games of the 1988 tournament—one of the most prestigious events in weiqi (Go).

Its addition to ACM’s national collection ensures that a defining chapter of Singapore’s mind sports history is preserved for future generations.

The donation comes at a pivotal moment for Singapore’s weiqi scene. On March 31, 2026, 15-year-old Chen Yihang became the nation’s first professional 1-dan player, certified by the Nihon Ki-in.

His journey—from competing at the 2019 Southeast Asia Go Congress to training full-time in Japan—reflects the growing global reach of Singapore’s mind sports community.

A championship moment in Singapore

Credit: Fanstanza

The showcase also ties into the SJ60 Eiou Championship Singapore Match, one of Japan’s major professional shogi title events.

Following the final match on April 3, 2026, the very board used in competition will be displayed within the exhibition—offering a rare bridge between live play and museum curation.

“I’m truly pleased Japanese culture can transcend borders and generations, connecting with so many fans,” said Kawabe.

This integration of contemporary competition and cultural storytelling underscores shogi’s enduring relevance, not just as a game of strategy, but as a living cultural tradition.

Credit: Fanstanza

Beyond shogi and weiqi, the refreshed Let’s Play! exhibition expands its scope with 25 video interviews featuring Singapore-based mind sports players. These personal accounts—detailing training, discipline, and passion—offer visitors a deeper understanding of the intellectual rigor behind these games.

ACM’s initiative reflects a broader shift: the growing recognition of mind sports as official sports in Singapore, and their continued importance in shaping cultural identity across Asia.

Let’s Play! The Art and Design of Asian Games runs until Sunday, June 7, 2026, at the Asian Civilizations Museum.

With its blend of history, competition, and pop culture, the exhibition offers a rare opportunity to experience shogi and other mind sports in a new light.
