The Test of Time update for Sid Meier’s Civilization VII is officially launching on Tuesday, May 19, 2026, bringing what Firaxis describes as the game’s biggest and most transformative update yet.
Available free for all players, the Test of Time update introduces sweeping changes to how campaigns unfold, including the long-requested ability to stick with a single civilization throughout an entire playthrough.

Alongside that, Firaxis is also overhauling the game’s victory systems and replacing Legacy Paths with a brand-new Triumphs system designed to make every campaign feel more distinct.
The update is the result of more than a year of feedback, iteration, and player testing following Civilization VII’s launch in February 2025, the game developer explained.
The Test of Time update finally adds permanent civilizations

One of the most requested features since launch has been the ability to remain as the same civilization across every Age. With the Test of Time update, players will finally be able to do exactly that through the new “Time-Tested Civs” system.
Players can now begin with any civilization from any Age and choose whether to evolve into a new civ during Age transitions or continue with their original empire for the entire game.
AI opponents will also mirror the player’s approach, either remaining consistent or shifting civilizations alongside the changing Ages.
Firaxis says this feature was designed to bring back a core element many longtime fans associate with the classic Civilization experience.

The system also introduces a new Syncretism mechanic, allowing players to adopt Unique Units or Infrastructure from civilizations currently in their Apex Age.
Those who prefer doubling down on their chosen empire’s strengths can instead focus on Affirmation bonuses to further specialize their civilization.
Victories are being completely reworked
The Test of Time update also introduces a major redesign of Civilization VII’s victory structure.
Rather than only focusing on the endgame, the new Victories system pushes players to pursue dominance throughout the entire campaign.

Victories are now intended to reward meaningful strategic decisions across every Age rather than simply reaching a final condition first.
Players can work toward one of four major victory categories:
- Military
- Economy
- Culture
- Science
Progress toward those goals begins as early as the Antiquity Age, with some victories potentially achievable before reaching the Modern era.
The redesign is an effort to give players more freedom and flexibility in how they pursue greatness across each playthrough, the game developers wrote.
Triumphs replace Legacy Paths entirely

Another major feature in the Test of Time update is the complete removal of Legacy Paths.
Replacing them is a new progression system called Triumphs, which introduces optional but challenging objectives designed to create more varied campaigns.
Triumphs are tied to six core Attributes:
- Militaristic
- Cultural
- Scientific
- Economic
- Diplomatic
- Expansionist
According to Firaxis, the new system aims to make individual matches feel more unique by encouraging players to experiment with different strategies and playstyles instead of following more rigid progression paths.
More maps, advisors, music, and gameplay improvements

Outside of its headline features, the Test of Time update also includes a wide range of additional improvements and content updates.
Players can expect a new Fractal Continent map, an overhauled Commerce screen, a new Advisor Council, updated map generation, additional Narrative Events, biome and specialist adjustments, new music and audio additions, and multiple balance changes across the game.
Firaxis also confirmed that the Test of Time update will include a brand-new leader available free for all players, though more details about the character have not yet been revealed at the time of writing.

Civilization VII’s biggest update yet arrives May 19

For players who have been waiting for a more traditional Civilization-style experience blended with Firaxis’ newer systems, May 19 could mark the game’s most important turning point since launch.
