What is Suikoden?

Suikoden is a role-playing game franchise created by Yoshitaka Murayama and published by Konami.
The series began with the release of the original Suikoden game for the PlayStation in Japan on December 15, 1995.

The games are loosely inspired by the classic Chinese novel Water Margin, which tells the story of a band of heroes who gather to fight against corruption.
In the Suikoden series, this concept appears through the legendary 108 Stars of Destiny, a group of allies the player can recruit throughout each story.

The upcoming anime adaptation is based on Suikoden II, one of the most acclaimed entries in the franchise. Originally released in Japan for PlayStation on December 17, 1998, the game is widely considered one of the greatest JRPGs ever made.
The anime adaptation, officially titled Suikoden: The Anime, was officially announced during a livestream celebrating the franchise on March 4, 2025.
The series is produced by Konami Animation and directed by Yuzo Sato, with NBCUniversal Entertainment Japan involved in the project’s production.

The anime is part of Konami’s broader revival of the series, which also includes the Suikoden I & II HD Remaster, released worldwide on March 6, 2025.
What is Suikoden about?
The story of the Suikoden anime centers on two childhood friends who serve together in the Highland Kingdom’s Unicorn Youth Brigade.
Their lives change dramatically after they witness the brutality of war between the Highland Kingdom and the City-States of Jowston.

As the conflict escalates into the Dunan Unification War, the two friends find themselves walking very different paths. One becomes a symbol of resistance, gathering allies and forming a new army drawn from the legendary 108 Stars of Destiny.
The other rises through the ranks of Highland, believing he can reshape the kingdom from within.
At its heart, the story explores themes of loyalty, political ambition, and the painful reality that war can divide even the closest friendships.
