What is Captain Tsubasa?

Captain Tsubasa is a long-running Japanese football manga created by Yoichi Takahashi.

First serialized in 1981, the story follows Tsubasa Ozora, a young football prodigy whose dream is to win the World Cup for Japan.

The series became a global phenomenon, inspiring multiple anime adaptations, films, and video games, and is widely credited with influencing generations of football fans and professional players.

Captain Tsubasa video games

The Captain Tsubasa franchise has inspired numerous video game adaptations that bring the iconic football action of the manga and anime to life in different gameplay styles.

In recent years, Captain Tsubasa: Rise of New Champions (2020), published by Bandai Namco Entertainment and developed by Tamsoft, marked a modern revival of the franchise on consoles and PC.

It features two story modes — one that retraces classic plotlines and another where players create their own character to rise through the ranks — alongside offline and online multiplayer modes.

Before its modern revival, Captain Tsubasa games pushed boundaries on older consoles. Vol. II: Super Striker (1990, Family Computer) blended soccer simulation with RPG elements, letting players manage stamina and special moves while following Tsubasa’s World Cup journey.
