“We approached the sound design of Miks’ abilities by first creating music, then extracting the most vibey elements and building the sound effects from there,” said Kevin Meier, Game Designer on Valorant.

“Music is also a big part of Miks’ backstory prior to joining Valorant, which we’re excited for players to hear more about in the future. His background reinforces his high-energy, social personality, since music is inherently mood lifting, just like he is,” he added.

Miks is for socially motivated, extroverted players who enjoy supporting their team, this ability allows players to make a meaningful impact beyond gunplay and mechanical skill through a targeted Combat Stim that empowers teammates to convert key moments into kills.

Sound familiar? Riot is a music company that happens to make games, which is why they’re very experienced in making music-based characters.

They already have two in League of Legends named Sona and Seraphine. These support champions, like Miks, also possess the ability to heal teammates and boost them at crucial offensive junctures.

Most notably, their ultimates are soundwaves that crowd controls enemies — exactly like Bassquake.

Beyond the Riot universe, another signature character that grooves to the beat with a set of toggle abilities is Lucio of Overwatch. Upbeat, positive, and encouraging, Miks is bascially the equivalent in Valorant.

“Miks’ gameplay is teamplay-first. He’s able to change the tempo as a round progresses based on what his team needs,” Kevin explained.

“Harmonize is great when your team needs to take a site or space, and you want everyone to be more effective in combat. Miks is also able to keep the tempo during battle, or take advantage of downtime, by healing allies before their next engagements.”

On the gameplay side, sound waves inspired his abilities, Kevin revealed. Miks’ M-Pulse device was inspired by musical devices such as a synthesizer, MIDI, and sequencer. It fuses soundwaves from his body, mashing the notes into a new tune.

Likewise, music and sound inspired his ability names. “His Concuss and Harmonize lean into bass heavy tones, while his Ultimate Bassquake mimics the throbbing bass you hear standing at the front of a concert next to the speaker, when you can feel the pressure and deafening effect,” Kevin revealed.

The design team also paid close attention to his equip sounds and are looking forward to see how players turn them into sick beats.
