This expansion represents a significant step up for Rowell TCG, which began as a neighborhood video rental shop before evolving into a cornerstone of the local card game scene.
Chong Sze Wen, the founder of Rowell TCG, noted that the choice of location was intentional. Places where people naturally gather for shared interests are essential for building a community.
By setting up in a well-known youth hub like *SCAPE, the store gains direct access to a generation of young enthusiasts and casual players alike. Ethen Ong, Deputy Executive Director of *SCAPE, highlighted that the partnership aligns with the venue’s mission to be a place where youth can connect through their passions.
The timing of the launch reflects the massive growth of the trading card game market in Southeast Asia. As of 2024, the regional market was valued at over US$101.7 million, with physical cards remaining the most popular way to play. The opening day featured a ribbon-cutting ceremony attended by representatives from The Pokemon Company, the *SCAPE leadership team, and prominent TCG influencers. Immediately following the ceremony, the doors opened to the public for beginner workshops and Gym Battles, giving newcomers a chance to learn the ropes alongside veteran players.
