What is the Hana Kimi anime?
The Hana Kimi anime is the long-awaited animated adaptation of the legendary shoujo manga series Hanazakari no Kimitachi e (translated as For You in Full Blossom). Originally written and illustrated by the late Hisaya Nakajo, the manga was first serialized in Hakusensha’s semi-monthly magazine, Hana to Yume, beginning in 1996.
Over its eight-year run, which concluded in 2004, the series grew into a massive franchise spanning 23 volumes. The manga sold over 17 million copies in Japan alone.

The story follows Mizuki Ashiya, a Japanese girl living in the United States who becomes deeply inspired by a high jump athlete named Izumi Sano. After Sano unexpectedly quits the sport, Mizuki decides to return to Japan and enroll in his school to encourage him to jump again.
Sano studies at Osaka Academy, an elite all-boys boarding school. To stay close to him, Mizuki cuts her hair and poses as a boy. She ends up as his classmate and even his dormmate.
As a testament to its popularity, Hana Kimi has been adapted into several live-action television dramas across Asia. These include the 2006 Taiwanese version, the 2007 Japanese drama starring Maki Horikita and Shun Oguri (followed by a 2011 remake), and the 2012 South Korean series To the Beautiful You. Despite these many adaptations, the Winter 2026 series marks the very first time the story has been brought to life as a full-length television anime.
The Hana Kimi anime is produced by the animation studio Signal.MD, known for their work on Net-juu no Susume, Platinum End, and Words Bubble Up Like Soda Pop. Under the direction of Natsuki Takemura, it features modern character designs and a soundtrack by the chart-topping duo YOASOBI.
