In Hana Kimi anime episode 4, Sano begins training to return to high jump.
Nakatsu invites Mizuki to his soccer match against Tokyo High, and he is surprised when Sano, Sekime, Noe, and Kayashima all show up to support him.

After Osaka High wins, the group encounters Makoto Kagurazaka, Sano’s former rival. Kagurazaka taunts Sano for quitting the sport, and Mizuki steps in to defend him.
The next day, Kagurazaka visits Osaka High and meets Mizuki. When he insults Sano again, Mizuki slaps him, and Sano intervenes before Kagurazaka can retaliate.
Later, Mizuki reflects on why she moved to Japan — seeing Sano jump on TV years ago inspired her to fix a falling out with a friend, making him her source of strength.
On his end, Sano continues to struggle during practice, failing to clear mid-height jumps due to what Dr. Umeda describes as a psychological block caused by past injury trauma.
That evening, the boys hold a hotpot party using a box of lemons Kayashima received. Unfortunately, Kayashima mistakenly serves wine, thinking it is grape juice, causing Sano to get drunk and dizzy. The episode ends with a drunk Sano pulling Mizuki into a kiss.
