The Hana Kimi anime follows Mizuki Ashiya, a Japanese-American student who transfers to a Japanese high school to be near her idol, high jumper Izumi Sano. Because Sano attends an all-boys academy, Mizuki must disguise herself as a male student to enroll.
Her situation becomes even more complicated when she is assigned as Sano’s roommate, forcing her to hide her true gender in the classroom, the locker room, and their shared living space. As she maintains her cover, her presence causes several students and the school physician to begin questioning their own feelings and orientations.
The series is based on the manga “To You in Full Bloom” (Hanazakari no Kimitachi e) created by Hisaya Nakajo. The original manga was published by Hakusensha in the magazine Hana to Yume and ran from 1996 to 2004.
The production of this adaptation is helmed by director Natsuki Takemura, with the animation brought to life by the studio Signal.MD. The series also features the chart-topping duo YOASOBI performing both the opening theme song, “ADRENA,” and the ending theme song, “BABY.”
