Total sales for the original title have now climbed past 30 million units, a feat complemented by the strong performance of its subsequent releases. The expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, has already moved 10 million units, while the multiplayer spin-off Nightreign has reached 5 million units since its debut.

The expansion sends players into the Realm of Shadow to investigate the history of Queen Marika and the motivations of the demi-god Miquella. This journey introduces Messmer the Impaler as a central antagonist and expands upon the mysticism established in the base game.

By exploring this new territory, players uncover deeper layers of the lore originally crafted through the collaboration between Hidetaka Miyazaki and George R. R. Martin.

Earlier this year, the franchise branched out into the survival genre with the launch of Nightreign. This standalone title focuses on cooperative play and unpredictable encounters with massive enemies, some of which reference iconic designs from the Dark Souls series. The gameplay is designed to ensure that no two sessions feel identical, emphasizing replayability within the shared universe of the Lands Between.

The reach of the series is set to expand even further with the upcoming Tarnished Edition. This package is being developed for the Nintendo Switch 2 and will include the base experience alongside the expansion. New cosmetic options for character armor and the spectral steed Torrent are also included in this version, marking the first time the title will be available on a Nintendo platform.

Elden Ring and its expansion, as well as Nightreign are available on PC via Steam.

Elden Ring evolves into a cross-media franchise

Beyond the realm of gaming, the property is making a transition into cinema. A live-action film adaptation is currently in development through a partnership with A24. Alex Garland has been tapped to direct the project, bringing his specific cinematic style to the high-fantasy setting.

This move signals an intent to turn the brand into a multi-media franchise that extends far beyond the initial software release.

The success of these titles is rooted in the open-world design of the Lands Between. Unlike previous FromSoftware games that utilized more contained environments, this world offers a seamless landscape that rewards curiosity and organic discovery.

The narrative depth provided by George R. R. Martin gave the developers a foundation of thousands of years of history to build upon. This backstory involves the shattering of the Elden Ring and the subsequent war among the demigods.

This complex political and spiritual conflict provides the motivation for the player character, a Tarnished of no renown, to return to the Lands Between and attempt to become the Elden Lord.
