Not all Hana Kimi episodes are created equal.

Nearly three decades since Hisaya Nakajo’s beloved manga first graced the pages of Hana to Yume, Studio Signal.MD finally brings Mizuki Ashiya’s wild disguise adventure to life in animated form.

5. Hana Kimi anime Episode 1 ‘Please Be My Friend!’

No list of the best Hana Kimi episodes would be complete without the premiere that started it all.
Hana Kimi Episode 1 opens with one of the series’ most defining images: Mizuki standing in front of a mirror, scissors in hand, cutting off her hair and stepping into a life she has no guarantee of surviving. This scene immediately lets us in on who Mizuki is, what she wants, and just how far she’s willing to go to get it.

From there, “Please Be My Friend!” introduces Izumi Sano, Shuichi Nakatsu, and the entirely chaotic members of Osaka High’s Dorm 2.
What really makes this episode stand out is its cliffhanger. Just as Mizuki seems to have found her footing, school doctor Hokuto Umeda sees straight through her disguise, and the show makes clear he’s known the whole time.
As far as entry points go, this episode hooks you exactly when it needs to and sets the emotional and comedic tone for everything that follows.
4. Hana Kimi anime Episode 9 ‘Can Things Stay This Way?’

Few Hana Kimi episodes pack as much romantic tension into a single runtime as this one. In Hana Kimi Episode 9, Sano steps in to pull Mizuki out of a dangerous situation when Makita corners her.
Later, the two get stranded together on a cliff with no easy way out, and Mizuki and Sano are forced into exactly the kind of prolonged closeness that both of them have been carefully avoiding.
There are no distractions, no dorm chaos, no third parties to defuse the mood — just the two of them, and the weight of everything still left unsaid.
Sano, for once, drops his guard and tends to a feverish Mizuki. The episode’s most talked-about moment arrives when he helps her drink water in a way that unmistakably lands as a kiss. It’s the kind of scene that the best Hana Kimi episodes are built around — quiet, and with a lot of emotional intensity.
3. Hana Kimi anime Episode 4 ‘The Source of Strength’

Hana Kimi Episode 4 starts innocently enough when Kayashima’s family sends him an enormous box of lemons, and Mizuki suggests turning it into a hot-pot party. What could go wrong? Quite a lot, as it turns out.
A bottle of alcohol gets accidentally mixed in with the group’s non-alcoholic drinks. Sano ends up drinking most of it without realizing, and Mizuki tracks him down to their shared room to find him unexpectedly drunk.
What follows is the kind of wrong-place-wrong-time scenario that the shoujo genre handles better than almost any other.
At the end of all the misunderstanding and mayhem, Mizuki and Sano share their first kiss. It is the kind of moment that sneaks up on you because it arrives wrapped in comedy, and by the time it lands, you are laughing and holding your breath at the same time.
2. Hana Kimi anime Episode 11 ‘Nanba-Senpai?’

Minami Nanba spends most of the season as the charming, effortlessly magnetic senior who seems to glide through life without anything truly rattling him. Episode 11 is where that image cracks open.
When Nanba learns that his ex-girlfriend is getting married, the news hits harder than he lets on. Watching him sit with this particular sting, the grief of a love that ended before you were ready, is one of the most unexpectedly mature moments across all the Hana Kimi episodes in Season 1.
Rather than retreating into himself, he turns his pain into wisdom. Nanba offers Mizuki advice that becomes one of the most memorable Hana Kimi quotes in the anime series.
It’s a rare thing when a supporting character earns a moment this good. Nanba has always been easy to like, but Episode 11 makes him genuinely hard to forget.
1. Hana Kimi anime Episode 12 ‘I Was the Same’

A season finale should earn its spot at the top—and the final Hana Kimi episode of Season 1 does just that.
“I Was the Same” has everything — action, drama, comedy, romance — all packed into a single episode that feels less like a conclusion and more like the story finally hitting its full stride.
What cements “I Was the Same” as the best Hana Kimi episode of the season is the moment at the end with Sano. After everything that’s happened, he comes closer than he ever has to saying out loud what has been building since Episode 1. He almost confesses to Mizuki. Almost. And then the episode ends.
You finish the episode wanting more, not out of frustration, but out of longing for what comes next. This almost-confession is its own kind of torture — close enough to feel real, just out of reach enough to keep you hooked.
We can’t wait for Season 2!
