SEGA’s growing esports ecosystem

SEGA has been actively expanding its esports initiatives since 2018, when both the Puyo Puyo and Virtua Fighter series were certified as official esports titles by the Japan eSports Union (JESU).
Since then, the company has continued to build competitive ecosystems around its intellectual properties through tournaments, ranking systems, and international events.
The Puyo Puyo series in particular has seen steady growth, supported by official tournaments and community-driven competitions spanning a wide age range. Recent global initiatives such as the Puyo Puyo Global Ranking Series have helped elevate its visibility within the international esports landscape.
Meanwhile, SEGA’s Virtua Fighter franchise has also expanded its competitive footprint globally. In 2025, it appeared at EVO 2025, followed by the VIRTUA FIGHTER Open Championship, additional international tournaments, as well as an exhibition match at the Esports World Cup 2025.

Beyond competition, SEGA is also exploring edutainment initiatives that leverage its esports experience to support learning and skill development.

Today, Puyo Puyo is available across console, mobile, and PC platforms and continues to attract players of all ages worldwide.
As a JESU-recognized official esports title, the series maintains an active competitive scene supported by tournaments and community events, including Puyo Puyo Champions.
With 2026 marking the 35th anniversary of the series, SEGA is expected to continue expanding its esports and community initiatives around the franchise.
